Interestingly none of the Vietnamese I've known hate the west or even the US. It's all in the past for them.

Sadly it's not all in the past for those still affected all these decades later. These children have no future and their present existence (you can't call it living) is far from ideal.

Should there be compensation for this ongoing problem since this is not something the Vietnamese people did to themselves? It is the innocent ones who are suffering. If you had caused this level of suffering to others, should you not accept responsibility for the outcome?

Yes, but Americans aren't at fault as a people here. It's the ones who decided to use AO.

We should help them regardless of who was responsible. They deserve a better life.

They were always much smarter than Americans. One of the most civilised racial/cultural groups on earth.
Which is why Ho Chi Minh came to the US well before the war seeking help to prevent Nth Vietnam from becoming communist. He was ignored by the US government who subsequently declared war on his country after he unhappily accepted an 'alliance' with the Chinese.
That is the bitter irony of Vietnam which is almost universally forgotten. The US had the option of preventing the spread of communism by helping Ho Chi Minh in the first place. Instead, they waited for China to interfere in Nth Vietnamese politics and then declared war on North Vietnam. I never hear this mentioned when American commentators or politicians discuss the war.

@Papoon I have to admit I never heard of this, not having studied on the Vietnam war, but I will take a look. I have high respect for their culture, we had many of them here as refugees and they've fit in well in my country.
