Historically? Plenty of times, sadly. I am happy to name a bunch if you want, but it has been an effective tactic more times than you might credit. If you look at the formation of an independent Ireland, or the granting of observer status at the UN to the PLO, or even the formation of Israel...
That's just off the top of my head. I could probably name 20 without breaking a sweat.
I've managed to trawl my way through the thread before posting, but I have to admit, it wasn't easy.
For some of the more passionate people posting, would it be possible for you to state what you think is legitimate and what is illegitimate around the issue of exercising political and military power? It's quite hard to get a grasp on what some people actually think, since their position seems inconsistent dependant on which group we are talking about.
There is also the 'all muslims are the same', 'all westerners are the same' vibe, which is about as helpful as you'd expect. State what you would expect from a group, full stop.
(of course, you can ignore this. I just see this thread spiralling into useless rhetoric...
