One thing about religion is that it seems to grasp the hearts and minds of people to such a degree that they can be easily persuaded to fight, kill, and even die in a religious inspired cause. I sometimes question why it might happen in certain times and places, where someone just gets a wild hair up their butt and decides they want so start killing heretics. A lot of times, there also appears some economic or political motive underlying it. A lot of fighting was as much over trade routes and control of them as anything else. Of course, there was some degree of tribalism and nationalism, which grew even more compelling than religion.

The thing is, you can't really pay people enough to go off and die for you, but if you give them some kind of abstract "cause" or "belief" to fight for, then they'll be willing to do it for free.
