"Americans’ confidence in religion hits a new low"

........... but they still believe in ghosts, spirits, angels and Gods.
You can't get away from it........... folks believe in the afterlife and much more, which is far away from atheism, for instance. So Church numbers and religious titles have fallen, but that's not the whole picture.
You might have missed the point. The "nones" as they are called aren't necessarily atheists, they are just not religiously affiliated. This is a phenomena which probably points more to organized religion nit keeping pace with social progression, as many cite as their reason for disaffiliating is the dogmatic position on social issues.

No one is denying they aren't there, or even claiming they still aren't a majority.
However, with each year that passes there are fewer of them.
No!
No survey has ever been carried out on %s of folks who believe in ghosts, spirits, angels etc!
Nearly everybody I know believes ion spooks etc?

(Bet you're scared of the dark! :D well..... a bit )

Actually, those have been done.
Poll: Americans' Belief in God Is Strong--But Declining
--72 percent believe in miracles, down from 79 percent in 2005;

--68 percent believe in heaven, down from 75 percent;

--68 percent believe that Jesus is God or the Son of God, down from 72 percent;

--65 percent believes in the resurrection of Jesus Christ, down from 70 percent;

--64 percent believe in the survival of the soul after death, down from 69 percent;

--58 percent believe in the devil and hell, down from 62 percent;

--57 percent believe in the Virgin birth, down from 60 percent.

The same poll also found that belief in Darwin's theory of evolution increased to 47 percent, up from 42 percent in 2005.

And it shows that 42% of Americans believe in ghosts (especially younger people), 36% each believe in creationism and UFOs, 29% believe in astrology, 26% believe in witches and 24% believe in reincarnation – that they were once another person.

Poll: Majority Believe In Ghosts - CBS News
Nearly half of Americans say they believe in ghosts, or that the dead can return in certain places and situations.

And a third one.
The belief in such things in a steady decline.

(Bet you're scared of the dark! :D well..... a bit )
I am actually very fond of the dark. It doesn't bother my eyes or burn my skin like the light does, it's peaceful, calm, and tranquil, and gorgeous on a clear night. I was born in the dark, and I have always preferred it over the light.

"Americans have less confidence in organized religion today than ever measured before — a sign that the church could be “losing its footing as a pillar of moral leadership in the nation’s culture,” a new Gallup survey finds.

Less than half of Americans hold the church in high esteem. Confidence dwindled to all-time low among Protestants in 2015.

The church and organized religion is losing its footing as a pillar of moral leadership in the nation's culture. Once reliably at the top of Gallup's confidence in institutions list, it now ranks fourth behind the military, small business and the police, and just ahead of the medical system. The good news for the church is that it still ranks among the more well-respected institutions at a time when fewer than one in four Americans have confidence in several others, including Congress and the media."

So how long will this plunge continue? Think it will ever get down to the single digits?
That's because Americans gave become illiterate when it comes to religion like Christianity. Our society shows what you get as a result. Nothing Good.

That is bull. Atheists and agnostics actually tend to be more literate about religion than the religious.
Survey: Atheists, Agnostics Know More About Religion Than Religious : The Two-Way : NPR
The Pew Forum on Religious Religion and Public Life released a survey on religious knowledge today. Atheists and Agnostics scored higher on it than anyone else, closely followed by Jews and Mormons, all Christians, Protestants and Catholics, were far behind.

Twilight Hue

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
There's also an issue by which religion has now arguably morphed into a booming cottage industry steering away from It's initial roots to the point where it becomes a commodity more than a religion, as well the associated trend towards personal self aggrandizemt and fame brought about by numerous organizers and leaders further diluting any effectiveness by way of poor example.

I take more and more people through dissatisfaction in one form or another will consequently abandon larger mainstream organizational structures making way for a more personalized experience through smaller groupings of people, and those seeking out solo practices and faiths.

I think there may be much truth to this. But not with just religion. Ideas such as Marxism have become more popular because the ideas of "trickle-down" economics have failed so many, and the ideas of hard work being rewarded in capitalism have not paid off for many. For many the hard word did get higher pay, but the higher pay put them on the chopping block in order for companies to reduce their budgets. In terms of organized religion, people pray to god for solace, but the hard times are too strongly "in your face" to believe such things. If god is really there, loving them and watching over them, why did their child get cancer, why was their job lost, and why have hard times, again and again over the decades, befallen a nation that has given itself to god?
Why follow the shepard when you are only lead to barren lands and rivers that have little water?

It only indicates that people have lesser belief in Christianity; it does not reflect the total picture of the Religion, Christianity is only a part of it.

Given the two current threads, have we not posted enough to show it just isn't Christianity? Even in Japan, more people are identifying as agnostic or atheist. Religion, as a whole, is on a slow but steady decline.

As I pointed out HERE "Considering that Christians comprise the bulk of believers in the USA, (94.5%) as noted below [pie chart], the rest of the religions only make up 5.4%, which I consider negligible. And, plugging in Judaism, which is also declining, the rest of the religions only comprise 3.4% of those in the USA that might not be declining."

It's about trust, which is really about perception. Kind of the agenda of some atheist folks, to attack the trust people have in religion.

Kind of why the Catholic fought so hard to make sure the world held the right perception of the Church. Now the perception is bad. Probably why the Pope is coming out anti-violence, anti-gun etc. Thinking this will improve the perception of the church and maybe regain it's trust.

I don't know, it depends on how well the Catholic leaders can work the PR angles.
