An advantage to a fall

Lucifer is said to have rejected heaven, and with him many angels. Rebelling against God in full sight of all his glory.
Agreed.
Though I am not so sure that his name is "Lucifer".
Lucifer is used in the Bible as a title, not a name.

Is his reason for doing this selfish, him wanting to become as God?
Anything is possible, I suppose.
Seems to me that there is more to it than what Christian doctrine/dogma reveals./dictates.

He had to have seen some advantage in this, he could do something, right?
He obviously disagreed with God on at least one matter.
Disagreed to the point of rebelling against God.

Or did he do it knowing there was no hope to become like God?
Seems to me that it is merely an assumption that he wanted to be God.

If he was the greatest of the angels, and he did see the glory of God, how could he rebel, and be condemned to an eternity of punishment, no less by his own will?
Because he disagreed with God.

Mjolnir,
At Isa 14:12, the angel later names Satan the Devil is called the shining one. Some Bible translations have translated this into Lucifer, which is not a good translation. The word Lucifer means a light bearer, which Satan is definitely NOT.
Satan was never the greatest of God's angels. Jesus was the first of God's creation and also the greatest, John 1:14,18, Jesus is called, THE ONLY BEGOTTEN. This term means that God created Jesus when only God Himself existed, and He created Jesus with no assistence. All other things were created for Jesus and through Jesus, Col 1:16,17.
If you stop to think about it Jesus would fulfill the term much better, as Jesus was a real light bearer to the nations, John 1:6-9.
At Isa 14:12-14, Satan is likened to the King of Babylon. The King of Babylon ruled over the world, Satan wanted to rule in heaven.
We have another account about Satan recorded at Eze 28:13-19. Here Satan is compared to the King of Tyre. The things mentioned at Eze 28:14-16 show that Satan was a beutiful angel, it seems over the Garden of Eden, the Covering Cherub. Because of his splender he wanted to be worshipped by mankind and also other angels.
Satan, like all of God's creation was perfect. When he decided to rebel against God he became a selfborn sinner.
Since Satan was very smart, he had to know that he had no chance of usurping God's position. More than likely Satan, along with other angels decided that they would rather live a period and try to ruin God's purpose, because they did not want to be under the rule of anyone.
Notice at Eze 28:17, the scripture says, onto the earth I will throw you. This exact scripture was fulfilled at Rev 12:7-9. Notice verse 12, where it tells us about Satan's disposition, and the reason for the terrible troubles we are experiencing on earth today.

mjolnir,
First it is important that we understand who is the Archangel is.
Jesus is the Firstborn of all things, Col 1:15, Rev 3:14. Jesus also has the title of WORD, meaning that he was used by God as His spokesman, both to angels and to men, John 1:1,14, Rev 19:13.
Jesus is called God's ONLY-BEGOTTEN. This mans that God made Jesus totally by Himself, with no help. All other things were made through Jesus and for Jesus. Prov 8:30 says that Jesus was the Masterworker for God.
Jesus was always the highest of all created things. Jesus was even exalted to a superior position because of his faithfully carrying out God's purpose on earth, Phil 2:8,9.
The Bible speaks of the angel that became Satan, as the covering cherub, he was most likely God's second creation. Isa 14:12-15, seems to be speaking about Satan, when the scriptures here are speaking about the Kung of Babylon. In verse 12 we see in many Bibles the translation Lucifer. The term used there is meaning Shining One. Satan is definitely not a shining one. This title would more appropriately be for Jesus, John 1:7-9.
At Exe 28:12-18, where God condemns the King of Tyre, most Bible Scholars believe these scriptures are also a reference to Satan.
By what theswe scriptures say it seems that a beautiful angel, made himself Satan, and Devil, by being a SELFBORN sinner, Resisterr and Slanderer.
Since Satan was very smart, having lived for billions of years, there is no way anyone on earth can be sure why Satan would rebel, when he had to know you cannot win against The Almighty God, Jehovah.
If might have been for the reason that many people today do not want to listen to God. They do not want for anyone to tell them what to do. They want to do what they want to do, when they want to do it. Maybe Satan did not want to be a servant of God, forever, he would rather try to thwart God's purpose for a while then go into everlasting death, while trying to bring alone with him as many humans as possible.
