Sojourner, In LDS theology most will become angels (servants to God), but many will accept the "fullness" of the Father, or the "fullness" of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and will become Gods, or equal with God, having all that the father hath, and will henceforth not be called angels, but Gods.
Replace the word pawn with the word servant. We are all servants to God, at this point, and many will be for eternity.
LDS theology teaches that we may become more than a servant to God, but can become equal with God.
