This isn't usually my cup of tea, but violence is hitting hometown, too, with two separate murders over the weekend. Both involved guns, and one person was buying lemonade at a child's snack stand, of all places. With all the recent happenings, its hard not to think about.

Some cry they need them for defense. Others cry they should all be flushed. I don't have any answers myself, but I wonder what exactly our experience with guns is on the US soil.

Anyone can answer the poll, but please only answer for your experiences while in the US.

When I was assaulted he had a pistol. He even fired it and hit me with it twice.

My great-grandfather committed suicide with a shotgun. An uncle committed suicide with a revolver. Recently, my great nephew was murdered in his sleep with a Glock his ex-girlfriend, his killer, stole from her step father.

*She used a knife, too. He didn't stand a chance either way. It was gunshot wounds that killed him.

I am so very sorry to hear that. :(

None of the above?
Other?

My grandfather committed suicide with a handgun several years before I was born. I'm not aware of anything else untoward amongst family or close friends with guns. Mostly, they have been used for hunting. Or in war. It has had no direct impact on my life, therefore I wouldn't vote for the fourth choice.

None of the above apply to me. The use of a gun to ward off an attack by a family friend yes.

If someone used a gun while they were with you to ward off someone else, I'd say its relevant to the second option. I edited it to make it more fitting.

I have had someone threaten me with a shotgun on one occasion and on another a different person threatened me with a handgun.

I was taught not to do things like that and I haven't. The only time it is reasonable to use a weapon is in defense in my opinion. You don't use it to threaten or intimidate people.

Good idea, I was not present. There was a clear threat to steal their vehicle. He changed their mind without firing a shot.

I've been a victim of armed robbery, once with a gun, once with a knife.

I had one acquaintance - an American - who died by suicide involving a gun.

I've never been threatened by a gun in the US myself, but a couple of my friends were: they were on a rural back road, took the wrong branch at a fork in the road (a guy's driveway was in better shape than the actual road, so they mistook it for the road), and ended up at the home of someone who didn't appreciate visitors who greeted them with a shotgun.

I've been threatened with a gun and was glad I was wearing a gun at the time because the sight of it changed the man's attitude.

Do you know where about?

This may not qualify, however, Father in Law operated several restaurants. In one restaurant he kept a gun under the counter near the cash register. Employees allowed patrons to wash their hands behind the counter( teenagers who were sweaty and ordered sandwiches). The gun was stolen; the boys later were drinking and decided to play Russian Roulette resulting in one dead teenager...approx. 1964 @JustGeorge

I have several guns that haven't hurt or killed anyone, but that wasn't a choice in your poll.

I am just more curious about events surrounding them, and how many people have had a personal experience with them as weapons. I am sure there are many guns out there that stay fairly stationary.

I've never fired a gun and hopefully never will. The only people I know who own guns are police, army and licensed hunters. Those are the only ones allowed to have guns in most of Europe, and I'm glad for that.
Anyone here who doesn't have a license and wants to buy a gun would have to do it on the black market, and it's hard and extremely expensive.
I remember the fist time I saw ammunition for sale in a supermarket in the US, I was like "what?? so you buy your milk, bred, fruit... and don't forget the bullets". I still have that image in my mind. And the first time I went into a gun shop - I wanted to buy a zippo lighter I saw on their window - my jaw dropped. It was years ago and I didn't have a clue those shops existed outside of the military realm. For me it was like going into another planet... it still is.

There's a shop on the way out of state in which the name always baffles me... "Family Liquor". ....what now? Booze for the whole family? I like a glass of wine now and again, but that just seems excessive...

When we first moved to France there was (now closed) a sports superstore that had a department for the sale of firearms, ammunition and protetive clothing.

Coming from the UK i was astounded..
