America has another historic first now. Today is the 249th birthday of the United States Marine Corps. This is an apropos opportunity to congratulate Vice President-elect James David Vance who will become the first United States Marine Corps veteran to serve as Vice President. Congratulations to him and semper fidelis.

Vance was a marine in name only.
Excerpted....
In an excerpt from his 2016 memoir “Hillbilly Elegy” that was published by Military.com, Vance identified himself as a “public affairs marine,” or a military journalist.
VERIFY found two military news articles published in 2005 and 2006 that were written by Cpl. James D. Hamel, the name he used to serve in the Marines.

The marines I know IRL are all "shooters".

Now, this is not to criticize Vance for pursuing
his interest, & avoiding danger. I respect that.
But he shouldn't be falsely glorified as a soldier.

As a Marine veteran myself I can say you are full of feathers. Vice President Vance earned the title of United States Marine when he graduated from boot camp and you can't take that away from him. He served. You didn't. The difference shows.

Ouch!
So harsh.
Vice President Vance earned the title of United States Marine when he graduated from boot camp and you can't take that away from him. He served.
In a non-combat role.
Although he might've suffered a paper cut.
You didn't.
Yer darn toot'n!
**** the draft!

BTW, I had more military weapon experience
than Vance did. (Designing them.)

The difference shows.
In the hebetude, & fawning over authoritarians shown in your posts?

We Marines don't need your approbation. We know who we are and what you are.

Semper fidelis meaning "always faithful." but Latin is more flexible than in the distant past. So, for example:

"I go back and forth between thinking Trump is a cynical ******* like Nixon who wouldn't be that bad (and might even prove useful) or that he's America's Hitler," he wrote privately to an associate on Facebook in 2016. [source]

So in this case, "semper/always" means roughly eight years, while "fidelis/faithful" carries with it more the sense of bootlicking lackey.

Of course, his decision to serve the leader of a coup attempt against the duly-elected government of the nation is at odds with his oath as a Marine... specifically the part about protecting against "enemies [...] domestic."

He's a Marine, but he's a dishonourable Marine.

Anything to make the opposition look bad huh. The United States Marines say he was a marine. Let it go.

Actually, I showed approval for Vance's chosen
military career. My criticism is of Magas who
pretend that he's a soldier, & worthy of respect
simply because he was a marine.
The United States Marines say he was a marine. Let it go.
Never said he wasn't a marine.
Just not a soldier.
I'm not big on letting things go.
This exchange would have to become much
more tedious or boring. It's not there yet.

He was a Marine, but he's also a Marine who criticized Walz's military service record because Walz never saw combat (Vance's exact words were "What bothers me about Tim Walz is the stolen valor garbage.")

... so it does seem fair to judge Vance by the standard he uses to judge others. OTOH, Vance's standard seems to be completely irrational, so that's a strike against it.

Wow, how wrong you are here. Vance criticized Walz for lying that he was in war "combat" when he was not. Vance never claimed he was in combat himself. He did not criticize Walz for not being in combat.

Not "real" enuf a marine to earn such worship
as a soldier, nor to justify his attacking Waltz's
service in the military.
If he did his job well, then he's as good as but
no better than people in skilled trades, than
clerks, than cooks, than janitors, etc.
