Anti-rape condom aims to stop sexual assaults

To an extent, yes, but don't let me scare you away from South Africa. It's not a gangster's paradise. Hijackings are still common, most houses have high walls with electric fences etc, but life does go on. I often walk around the streets alone, but this is in a suburb which is patrolled by security services, and i never go out at night. Crime's also starting to lessen from what it was, and according to statistics i heard on the radio we've actually got fewer break-ins PA than Britain and Australia.

and most South Africans would shoot through red lights if there was no other traffic - but that's because we're impatient :p

A normal condom works because it's put on right before the person engages in sex, only when its needed. There is no way to predict when one might get raped. For this thing to work, a woman would have to wear it ALL THE TIME. I, for one, am not going to go around with a latex tube full of sharp barbs in my private parts on a regular basis. It would be too cumbersome, too expensive. And like guns kept for self-defense, it would more likely inadvertantly hurt myself or someone I love than any attacker. As far as I can tell, this thing is useless.

I was thinking, what if some girl who was wearing it, somehow forgot about it, and decided to have sex with her boyfriend that night.
