Anyone here agree with W. Virginia's new "religious freedom" bill?

That is our First Amendment Right to freedom of religion reworded and reaffirmed. How could anyone be against it?

Not everybody considers the Constitution to be holy writ.
Especially the religious type people, who are well accustomed to reinterpreting scripture to fit an agenda.

It means what people want it to say.

That is a problem in the USA. People who think old writings mean what they want to believe is true. It's a bit worse in Muslim countries, but not a lot worse.

This is exactly the kind of legel instrument that should not even be considered, let alone exist.

Even attempting to interpret it demands that the government's agents must decide what is proper and sincere religious practice and what is not.

It is religious discrimination made law.

The language of the bill probably means that people of any religion will be able to use it as an excuse to ignore laws but there'll be hell to pay the instant somebody who is either neither:
  • white, or;
  • Christian
starts using it in a way white Christians don't agree with.

As I've explained a few times, regardless of what you believe, you can't open a business and put up a sign that says "no negroes allowed," you can't base hiring on religious affiliation, and you can't set it up so women cannot be in positions of authority above men. But they want to make sure they can say "No GLBT allowed."

I am saying (in my own inscrutable way) that this bill will never pass. They missed their window for this kind of thing.

I, for one, don't trust most politicians. But I assume they're not idiots, instead they're cagey. What scares me about this sort of thing is that some cagey politicians reckon that at least 51% of their constituents would think this is a good idea...
