hey, Michel. a few years ago, i had an interest in numerology, and i do think there may be something to it- it's certainly an interesting field. i mostly looked into it on-line, and was surprised by how numerology readings of names could and often did work well with other means of personality reading, e.g. meyers-briggs. it's neat.

what got you interested, Michel?

I really like the number 9! It has magical significance in most cultures. And mathematically it is a marvel! Using 9 as the base of my calculations (like everyday stuff that I calculate "in my head") has made my thinking more fluid in general, breaking away from the static pattern of the 10. Nine has a more fluent pattern... Just dig this: 9 18 27 36 45 54 63 72 81 90 99 108 and so on... All numbers divideable by nine, internally adds up to 9. That is, 54=5+4=9 or 345312=3+4+5+3+1+2=18=1+8=9 . So, for instance, the "666" is just one of the ways of saying "9", as is the 108 or 99 beads on a rosary.

Just some thoughts... :)

9 is a big number for me too as Ive explained. 333 3+3+3 =9 the number of Lucifer and the 333 are knowledge within.

speaking of "qabalah" :

F-G « Prayers and Reflections (full version at this link, below is an extract)

Gematria: The study or science and art of number and letter manipulation. This would include geometric forms such as the Tetraktys of the Decad. ”I {Jesus} have turned their (periods of) influence and their quadrangles and their triangles and their figures of eight , since their (periods of) influence remained turned to the left from the beginning, together with their quadrangles and their triangles and their figures of eight.” (”Pistis Sophia,” See also; Tetraktys of the Decad.” See also; ”Marsenes.” ) (Source: Saunder's Gnostic Glossary)

Jewish Perspective:

Gematria is one of a number of methods which Kabbalists, and others I might add, employ to uncover “hidden meanings” in Hebrew words and expressions. Simply Gematria is the art of calculating the numerical value of a word by adding together the value of each letter. Once the numerical value of the word is known, words or combinations of words having the same value can be carefully scrutinized and compared. In this manner one number can become representative of several ideas, all of which are understood to be intrinsically related.
A famous example often quoted by commentators and authors addressing this specific topic is Genesis 49:10 which reads “The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh, and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.” By Gematria the words “until Shiloh” – y’voh Shiloh (Yod [10] + Bet [2] + Alef [1] + Shin [300] + Yod [10] + Lamed [30] + Heh [5] = 358), align with the Hebrew word for Messiah – Mashiach (Mem [40] + Shin [300] + Yod [10] + Chet [8] = 358]). Hence, according to Kabbalah, there is a direct connection between the terms “until Shiloh” and “Messiah.” Associated here is the Gematria of Numbers 21:9 which reads “And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the Serpent of brass, he lived.” The serpent of brass is called Nachash (Nun [50] + Chet [8] + Shin [300] = 358). So there is a connection between “Messiah,” “until Shiloh,” and the “Serpent of brass.” Using this set of Gematria associations, Christian Kabbalists later assumed that the brazen serpent raised by Moses in the desert was a prefiguration of the Christian Saviour on the Cross. There are however other meanings such as the Nachash.
Using Gematria, Kabbalists arrive at many remarkable Holy Names or the names of Angels, revealing the mysteries of the world of the Merkavah (the fiery Chariot Throne and the Angels). An example is that the Gematria of the entire verse of Song of Songs 6:16: “I have gone down into the nut garden,” is equivalent to a verse in the Midrash (a Sacred Biblical Commentary) which reads “That is the depth of the chariot (Merkavah).”
There is really no limit to what can be yielded by employing this simple Gematria method explained above, but over the years the application of this system became more and more complex, and many more ways of practising this art were devised. I certainly cannot go into all of them in this short missive, but I should mention that there are two schools of thought in Kabbalah regarding the use of Gematria. One favours it, the other uses it very rarely, however both of them used it, hence Gematria is a key system in the “Letter-number Mysticism” of Kabbalah.
As said, Gematria became more and more complicated over the centuries. However, generally the most important types of Gematriot are:
1. The numerical value of one wore is equal to another word. This is the method explained above. Another example is the word Gevurah [Severity] (Gimel [3] + Bet [2] + Vav [6] + Resh [200] + Heh [5] = 216). The Gematria of this word is equal to the word Aryeh [Lion] (Alef [1] + Resh [200] + Yod [10] + Heh [5] = 216). A connection is therefore recognized between the ideas of “Severity” and “Lion” in Hebrew.
2. The reduction of numbers to single units. For example the value of Shin (300) is reduced to 3 or Kaf (20) to 2.
3. The squared number is calculated by squaring the numerical values of each letter in a word. for example the Tetragrammaton YHVH squared equals (Yod) 102 ( Heh) 52 (Vav) 62 (Heh ) 52 which equals 186. This is in turn equated with the word Makom [Place] (Mem [40] + Kof [100] + Vav [6] + Mem [40] = 186). Makom is also a Divine Name.
4. Adding up the value of all letters preceding a letter in an alphabetical numerical series. For example, the letter Dalet is the fourth letter of the Hebrew letter-numbers (alphabet), and the use of this type of Gematria in this case, requires one to add the values of the letters preceding Dalet, thus 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10.

Pythagoras did :p

not read my book on pythagorean numerology...but I guess you're fooling around...

pythagoras of course founded a mystery school, strict vegans etc etc...

at least one ancient account notes he was initiated initially by a certain group living on Mount Carmel in Israel....;)

I believe in religious numerology because of this neat thing I came across:

Take the alphabet (a,b,c,d,e,f,...etc) and number the letters forward (a=1, b=2, c=3...etc.) and backward (z=1, y=2, x=3...etc.). A should have the number 1 and the number 26 associated with it, and so on to Z. All number pairs will equal 27.

Now take the name of the Lamb from the Book of Revelation. It should look like this:

12 1 13 2
L A M B
15 26 14 25

Now subtract the top and bottom rows: 12 - 1 - 13 - 2 = -4
15 - 26 - 14 - 25 = -50

Now subtract the top and bottom rows backwards: 2 - 13 - 1 - 12 = -24
25 - 14 - 26 - 15 = -30

Now multiply 4 x 50 x 24 x 30...*

Now go to the Book of Revelation Ch. 14

*Multiplying four negative numbers will give you a positive product.

I don't believe in numerology, but it does have some interesting results.

My craft name in gematria is equivalent to higher self, good spirit, ivy (my celtic birth-sign of sorts), and in isopsephy is equivalent to augoeides.

Hell, I've even used it combined with poetry, but yes, i find it good for flexing the mind to consider other relationships that might exist.

I don't think it would work well for personality reading.

Well, I suppose I can now understand the "what"- I have aspergers' and numbers and patterns is often something that people like me are drawn to - maybe that was the initial reason for my interest.

I used to write a newsletter, here, for the forum, and in one issue, I did quite a bit of research, and was surprised by what I found.

The Golden Number for example; though I had been dabbling in numerology for years, what I read about the Golden Number gave me more incentive to believe that all things in life can be broken down to numbers and patterns.

My problem is, though, that I consider myself as a Christian (not a very good one, maybe, but I try......); as such, there is are barriers in the Bible, warning Christians not to meddle in such things; for example:-
The Occult
The Bible strongly warns people not to consult mediums and spiritists for the truth, but to inquire of God (Isaiah 8:19). Clearly, if those who practiced these arts have any power (beyond being great deceivers), it is not a gift from God (as some falsely claim). The Bible condemns and forbids these practices several times (Deuteronomy 18:9-14; Isaiah 44:25; Jeremiah 27:9; 2 Kings 21:6; 23:24). Divination and spiritism were despised practices of the heathens (Ezekiel 21:21; Isaiah 19:3; 1 Samuel 28). Scripture says that one of the reasons King Saul died was “because he consulted a medium for guidance” rather than God (1 Chronicles 10:13-14).

I have never used Numerology for "divination" - I don't believe that the future can be foretold anyway........ At the same time as having an interest in Numerology, I was also following other methods of divination - but, again, not to predict the future.

I have always considered that the future is completely fluid and dependent on one's own will and judgment, and, of course, choice.

Without the element of choice in life, there would be (IMHO)no point whatsoever in living ones' life; after all, this spell "through the valley of the shadow of death" is a test on our wills and choices we make.

That is my one concern - that these subjects have been used for divination (which is, of course "wrong" as far as I am concerned), but it can be very useful for advising people on the strengths and weaknesses in life.

Is that so wrong? I'd be interested in hearing the views of Christians...............

I'm interested in New Aeon English Qabala... think there's something in there...
Qabala is a useful magickal tool, but like all tool, the map is not the territory -

do I believe in numerology... no
do I use numerology in various forms... yes.

Christians use numerology all the time..

3 (trinity, two thieves crucified with Jesus, 3 days until the resurrection, mind body and spirit)
5 (medieval christian alchemists for the five senses and arms, legs and head inside a pentagram)
7 (7 days of creation, other things)
12 (tribes of ancient Israel, number of apostles)
13 (people at the last supper)
666/616 (number of the beast)

ect ect, all have a special symbolic meaning
