Anyone play/ed Dungeons and Dragons?

My friends and I have been playing for years now (but have never really broken past level 5, due to restarts). Just started into the newest edition and we are loving it as well. Anyone here cool enough to know what a d20 is? What are some of the best, worst, or weirdest experiences you've had in the game?

One of the weirdest and best things to happen so far would be our level 4-or-5 elf ranger riding a wild angry fire dragon (for honestly no reason other than Rule of Cool). He got tossed, fell about 100 feet, and still survived (unconscious and nearly didn't stabilize, but he hung in there).

The worst would probably be trying to pull a fast one on the evil authorities by escorting "captured" rebels to the chopping block, having them break free and get all of their attacks blocked and countered, then having to kill our fellow rebels to preserve our cover.

Anyone else wish to share their geeky collaborative roleplaying experiences from their times in D&D?

I bought some dice and just happened to show up for the beginning of a game, so I made a character and played for a few rolls, but I missed the next meeting. Also they were supposed to email me the rules, since the new game has new rules, but nobody did. At the time you couldn't get the new rules. Didn't work out. Maybe some other time.

I played some D&D back when it was AD&D Second Edition. But mostly I favor other RPGs.

Yeah, I dabbled back with Second Edition...or maybe 2.5? Meh...anywhoos...
Only time I was ever really into it was when playing the Birthright setting. Dunno if anyone knows that one here, don't think it was particularly successful.

But basically it had rules for running a kingdom, etc, as well as the normal RPG stuff. Playing online we got enough people together to populate the entire continent, and it played as much like an RPG version of risk as anything else.

I was a ruler of a sovereign nation, but the merchants guilds had all the real power. I tried playing them off against each other, which worked for the most part. But when I made my play for real power, it turned out one of the guilds had been aware of what I was doing all along, and had a little mercenary army stashed aside. That didn't end well. At least, not for me.

I had sex with girls instead. You should try it.

Yeah, sorry no. This is just rude and ignores that hey, GIRLS PLAY TABLETOP TOO.

Not letting it slide just because this is your shtick.

Anyway, I am actually between tabletop games right now and it's driving me crazy, it's why I LARP. I love the roleplay. I played a pixie ranger in a D&D 3.5 campaign that involved me being shoved into a mug filled with beer (drunk pixies are not quieter than sober ones), impersonating a god, and frequently being grabbed by my party before I could push the big red button. They were good at finding the invisible me.

Played a gnome cleric in Pathfinder Society, an engineer in a Savage Worlds Firefly, and trying to write up a dystopian Narnian setting, not sure what system I'll use yet.

There were girls at my game. One was a dwarf of some kind and the other one was...a light elf I think.

Ooh and one time I played an Orc who "Tok Like Dis" and as someone pointed out that orcs aren't stupid, I said "I know. But I tok like dis, you underestimate me."

Was quite a bit of fun, that was after my halfling had gone boom due to an unfortunate incident with a Vest (of many pockets? I forget the name.)

I've never played this game, does it involve you crushing your enemies? :D

I do play Risk every Christmas with four friends and we assign each other geopolitical factions: The Capitalists, The Communists, The Religious Fundamentalists and The Nationalists.

Yes, but only after learning massive volumes of rules, and finding players also familiar with said rules, and who can all agree to a schedule and consistently attend long, numerous sessions to complete a single game.

So Risk is a better game overall at the whole crushing enemies bit? :D

Probably. Or Hero Quest:

Been out of print for decades, but was super awesome. Loved it as a kid. It was kinda like Dungeons and Dragons, but the rules were simpler and more strait forward, easy to learn and play on the spot. Could play multiple "campaigns" in one night.

Oh, and Stratego. A favorite I still play occasionally.

Hmm...Stratego should be online for free somewhere. Maybe we should have a game sometime.
I haven't played in about 25 years, but I was decent back in the day.
Finding anyone to play against was a problem. Never had enough geek friends despite being a board game fan myself.

That'd be cool. :)

Birthright did. *sighs*
But apart from online, never got enough people together for long enough to reach any level of subtlety. It really encourages a longer term view of the things, and laying some groundwork before sending the soldiers across the border.

The joys of an almost bloodless war.
Used to regularly try to pave the way for my armies by bribing Thieves Guilds or Merchants inside my enemies borders.

In case anyone is interested in my ramblings, I think you can download Birthright stuff from here, since it's a discontinued line...

Never played it. My folks and my church said that it was a front for luring youth into devil worship and homosexuality. I always listened to my folks and my church. Plus, nobody knows about my mad halfling thief skills.

At least you didn't go for a cliched character class, like an elven archer, or an orcish barbarian, or a halfling thief...
