Anyone Want to Form a Writing Group?

I know the idea got proposed a long time ago but as far as I can tell, nothing happened with it. So here I am proposing the same idea:

Does anyone here want to "get together" and form a little RF writing group, one where we share our little pieces of prose (or poetry) with each other for discussion and so forth.

So who's with me?

Oh, and to get the ball rolling you can read some of my stuff here: silvermoon383's deviantART gallery

I would, except I don't share my works. However, I would be more than happy to provide constructive criticism. =)

Why don't you share your works? Not to be harsh, but "real" writers are happy to share and receive feedback.

Because one, I only share my writings with a select few people, because most of my works are actually pretty personal and I feel vulnerable when I do share them. To that note, most of the stuff that I do share is the more humerous/less serious stuff, cause hey, you can't judge me on a poem that I write about hating my cat because I'm locked out in the cold and the useless ******* doesn't know how to open up a door. =P My old poetry professor actually says that a lot of my writings could easily be published, but screw that crap. Just like F.L. Lucas talked about in his book of poetry "Marionnettes," I write for my own pleasure and I don't care if the whole world reads my works or no one, it just so happens that if I had the choice, it would be no one.

Well, thanks for sharing that. :)

Two, if I did post my works somewhere, it sure as hell wouldn't be the internet. I'm very much afraid of losing control of what is mine. How likely is that to happen if I did that? Not very. But it's a lot like sex. The only way to avoid all risks is to avoid doing it altogether.

I didn't mean to imply sharing over the internet (although that's what this thread is about). I wouldn't share over the internet either.

Thirdly, and most importantly, from my experience in poetry circles and poetry readings, and this isn't to be harsh, but "real" writers tend to be jerks. They have HUGE egos and more often than not are just waiting for their turn to speak again instead of lending an honest ear. I have never seen it not happen and and it's something I've grown very sick of. As a result, I will give constructive criticism, but not share, so that way instead of focusing on my writings, I focus on what's really important, the writings of others. I know I'm a good writer. Granted, I'm no Billy Collins or Lucia Perillo, but I'm still good. I don't need the validation of others to know that.

I used to have a great writing partner - so they're out there! :)

I respect your decision, but I must say that you may come off as a "real" writer tending to be a jerk by your "show me yours but I won't show you mine" attitude.

But...to each his own.

I choose not to share or critique online.

Okay, I finally managed to finish typing the 2nd chapter to my new story. You can read it here, and please, please, please let me know what you think and all that. You can comment either here, in a PM, or on my deviantart page if you so wish.

Thanks all for reading these, and I'm always available to read your stuff if you want.

Actually, this concern may be smaller than you think. The law automatically extends ownership privileges to the author at the point of creation.

While that's true, there may be publishing concerns (for those who wish to be published). Publishers prefer to have first rights. If you post your work on the internet, then you've lost that opportunity.

Should we consider asking the admins to talk about giving us a forum called the writers guild then?

Critique this:

There once was a place called RF
Where they talked of religion and meth
One was confusing
While others were using
And now we all head to our death

True. Although from the aspiring and published authors I've talked to, most major publishers don't care if you post one or two chapters. Just avoid the whole manuscript - or, at the very least, make sure there is an option to delete. ;)

Well, it's been a while so I thought it'd be time to bump this thread to see if there'd be any more interest.

Not to mention that I put up 2 more chapters of my story for people to read, enjoy, and critique: silvermoon383 on deviantART
Please let me know what you all think of it.

Would be interested in getting involved in a writing group.

I have some stuff that needs critiquing at some stage. I have one book published internationally and that was more by luck than judgement.

Working on new stuff, just to see how it goes.
