Anyone with OCD here?

No... but I do have two 'neurological' disorders. One is my PKD, which is paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskenisia. The other one... you know personally, although it's a debate whether it's a disorder or a natural variation of human species. ;)

One of my old acquaintances have OCD, and he would also show ticks time to time with his eyes and fingers. I had such an infatuation with him; he was super cute... :D

I've not been officially diagnosed with it, but I'm sure I've got it.

I have to make sure I have switched everything off before I leave a room or the house. I need to go round and check everything is switched off at least three times and (here's the fkn crazy bit!) sometimes I'm not convinced, so I have to switch things ON again, then devote my attention to switching them off.
:bonk:

I need about 10 minutes before I leave the house to do all this. Occasionally, I've cycled all the way to work but have had to turn back to re-check everything is off. The thing is, I KNOW everything's okay, but it's that wee voice in my head that says "ahhh, but have you really switched off the cooker / toaster / heater etc?"

Now, I know some of you may be having a chuckle at this (I sometimes laugh at myself over this, too), but it is really getting to me.

Any suggestions?

I know entirely how you feel, Noaidi. I have the exact same issues.

Have you been to your doctor about it?
All mine has said is, "You'll just have to deal with it". You can imagine how helpful that is. :D

No, I haven't seen anyone about it, but I'm reaching the stage where I think I'll have to. The response from your doctor was pretty harsh. Okay, GPs aren't qualified to deal with a lot of psychological issues, but he should have refered you to someone who is.

How do you deal with it yourself?

Consider yourself officially diagnosed, albeit by a groundskeeper.
I suggest talking to a shrink.

Geez... even the doctors here, as crappy and half-arsed as they may be, have pretty good resources for those with OCD and other type of different mental programming.

I don't think I do. I just fulfil my compulsions because it's easier than that nagging harassment.

I, too, fulfil them, but I'm getting increasingly angry at the control they exert over me and the amount of time wasted in what I know to be futile actions.

Time permitting, I'll see what I can dig up from the net on this and I'll post anything useful here.

Edit: http://www.ocdaction.org.uk/support-info/about-ocd/ It also has an online forum, which could be useful.
Apparently the compulsion I have is known as 'checking' or 'checking behaviour' and it seems to be a common feature among the forum posters.

What happens when you are denied the ability to check things like that? What if there is an emergency and you have to run out the door, or have someone pulling you out the door to go do something? How does it feel for you to not be able to complete your routine?

I don't deny myself checking. I have to do it. People around me know this, so they tolerate it. I do make myself (and others) late for things quite often, but that's secondary. Really selfish, I know, but I can't help it. Years ago, my girlfriend was driving us somewhere and I had to get her to turn back so that I could re-check. We had driven out of the city at this point, so it was a chore to travel all the miles back for something I knew I had already completed. We laugh about it now, of course, but at the time....:D

Luckily, nothing yet has occurred that has necessitated me leaving suddenly without checking. I don't know how I would feel if I was denied it. After doing some reading online tonight, I found that cognitive behavioural therapy has helped many people, so I'm going to get something done about it soon.

I will do it, unless it's something which bugs me afterwards. For example, I won't leave the house beforehand.
However, if it sets up and it's too far to go back, I'll even get someone else to do it on my behalf if I can't. I then do it as soon as possible, stressing over it and being preoccupied with it the whole time.
