The Devil's Advocate
Hinduism is generally more tolerant of religious differences because its theology teaches that there are many paths to the truth. But in general, it is no more gay-friendly than Christianity. In fact, culturally, I'd say India is far worse than the U.S. for acceptance of same-sex relationships. I realize that it's hard and painful to be attacked and have to defend yourself over and over again. And I agree you shouldn't have to. But keep in mind that we live in a society where same-sex couples live openly enough that this issue is at least being discussed. The very fact that there is resistance is indication of progress. Deepa Mehta, the director of Fire, received death threats when the movie came out in India. Some people attacked movie theaters where it played.Except, (and correct me if I'm wrong, Hindus), I've never heard a Hindu say that everyone should not eat beef or that they have to protect every single cow. They do not force their belief on others that they themselves should abstain from beef.
It's a wonderful movie, btw, if you haven't seen it yet.
