Reason, and reason again
The best evidence we have of MLK's views on homosexuality come from his widow. Coretta Scott King says, "Dr. King never publicly discussed his views about homosexuality but, in private conversations with his wife, expressed concern about discrimination against gay men and lesbians." In fact, one of the leaders in the civil rights movement, and a good friend whom MLK stood up for, was an openly gay male.

The "gay rights movement" isn't really all that new either. There were organizations in starting as early as the late 40's for gay rights. These organizations even attempted to have dialogue in the 50's with the civil rights groups. They didnt have a whole lot of success, but they did have some (as one of the members of a Black womens group was also a member of the first lesbian rights organization).
