Are romance novels "soft porn"?

I have found romance novels to be largely (but not solely) a meticulous and exquisitely drawn-out rape fantasy. There are some that delve into other sexual fantasies and utilizes the female gaze in their storylines where the female protagonist is in the drivers seat. But if the story leads into where the female is vulnerable, and she is "taken", IMO that points to a subliminal but powerful visual of a rape fantasy (which is still a popular fantasy for women).

It sounds like the Old School ones (circa 1970s-early 1980s). Those plotlines largely faded out by the 2000s. I've read a great number that have been published in the last 10 years and none feature rape fantasies. :)

Any you'd recommend? I spent some time in the Romance Novel section in the '90s, but I haven't re-visited since then, except for the Fifty Shades of Grey series.

This explains why I don't read them.

Sorry I'm late in replying but sure.

Julia Quinn writes wonderful, funny romances. My favorite by her is To Sir Phillip, With Love. But personally I prefer Eloisa James. I find her stuff to be funny and I love her heroine and hero's relationships. My favorites are probably Desperate Duchesses (the 1st book) and Duchess by Night which has the heroine cross dressing.

My autobuy authors though are Elizabeth Hoyt and Kieran Kramer. Hoyt has been around longer. I characterize her stuff as dark and brooding. Sort of like Charlotte Bronte. While Kramer's stuff is lighter and more humorous and I think of her as the Austen to Hoyt's Bronte.

My primary romance genres is historical so I can't really recommend much outside that specific subgenre at this exact moment.

Oh and Julie Anne Long. I've read three of her books but It Happened One Midnight was my favorite fiction book of 2013. It was riot and I laughed through it and I just love it.

Also Lisa Kleypas's historicals. Her Hathaway series are some of my favorites. Especially Married by Morning. That book! I loved it and immediately wanted to read it again. I'm a bit sad that she's been writing contemporary but I definitely recommend her historical.
