I was raised as a collectivist. That is, my culture prefers collectivism over individualism. However, due to me being me and also being raised in a Western country I am far more individualist.

I live in a collectivist society, but I can see a gradual shift to individualism, mainly thanks to TV and the Internet. I think that in the next one or two generations, our society will be mainly individualist. The reason why collectivism still lives, is because of low literacy rates and very little access to information in rural areas. The cities, however, tilt toward individualism. I was raised a collectivist, because that's what my parents were raised to be, and it didn't occur to them to ever give it a thought. I chose Individualism when I was old enough to understand that there was an option.
