Even if protestors were to successfully disrupt the public ceremony, as soon as they got to safety inside the building, Biden would still be sworn in; it takes about a minute or so.

I think he released a statement today saying he wasn't afraid to do it at the Capital building. Who knows what the final decision will be. One thing is for sure, I do not envy his secret service detail...
If he isn't afraid, then he clearly isn't as smart as I am.

Appearances are everything. He has got to show he won't cave to seditious hooligans who would delight in seeing him cower, possibly empowering and embolding them to keep at it and do more.

I'm pretty sure, however, that Biden will be behind at least as much bulletproof glass as Trump was at his insurrection rally on Wednesday

No doubts. It seems security has been significantly upped and will probably increased further during the inauguration.

That's what people who obsess over appearances say.
Poor "optics" was the reason the Capitol Sergeant At
Arms denied requests for back-up. How'd that turn out?
That was not a reason, that was an excuse. We have no idea what his/her reason was. Since when should a Sergeant at Arms be concerned about "optics" over security?

Politics (amd people) is funny like that. Habermas described this as "representative publicity," with the "kings authority" is presented through rituals performed for the people.
And as this election has highlighted, election day itself is pretty much the only aspect of our elections that isn't ritualized and a formal process that confirms what we already know. It's basically a bunch of symbols that only have power when people give them power, and these rituals that display these symbols reinforce the power in these symbols.
It is all whacky and bizarre, but it's how neurotypicals function, as they are more likely to attach emotion to rituals and traditions and enforce them simply as "that's just how it's done."

If I were Biden, I'd consider inaugurating
indoors with no news coverage. It's cowardly.
But I'm a coward. Taking away the theater of
the event would likely take the wind from sails
of the hostiles.

I agree...Not that you are a coward, but that the inauguration should be held indoors for the safety of our new President.

How about this: Trump supporters attack and occupy federal and state buildings all across the country. In response, Trump invokes the Insurrection law and declares martial law nationwide...
