Language is always going to change so I think everyone needs to get over it but how did this thread become about this? When I read the first entry I thought it was about something totally different.

Au contraire. You could make a case that it was the English who have run off with the King's English.:D
It's American English that's the more conservative in many respects. The dropped "R"s were an English affectation -- never caught on in the US -- or in much of Scotland or Ireland either. We still retain the "got/gotten distinction and grammatical number. Even spelling -- The replacement of the original Z with S in words like terrorize and categorize is a recent development.
