The "mysteriously dead informer" may be a popular movie trope, but the actual reality seems to be that most whistleblowers tend to face court charges and disappear into military prisons instead. This happened to Chelsea Manning and Reality Winner, and Edward Snowden only escaped that fate because he revealed his information while he was well outside the country - and even he is at this point essentially trapped in Russia.
