Assisted suicide what are your thoughts on legalising it?
After packing tiffin somebody was going towards a rail track to commit a suicide, The another one asked if you are going for a suicide than why tiffin ?
The suicider answered, If the train got late, than i'll eat my tiffin, Thus.. why to die empty stomach ? :D

I would have tied him to the tracks and stole his tiffin.

From the land of Jack Kevorkian, I vote yes....legalize it.
Btw, now that he is no more, is my coupon good for one free visit still valid?

I'm in favour of it. Especially after watching the documentary Terry Pratchett made on it (the author of Discworld and a strong supporter of legalising assisted death).

I'm for it, but there has to be an overriding reason; i.e. not just because I'm depressed. Rather, for something like end-stage cancer or other disease where recovery is not possible, and the person being of sound mind to make the rational decision.

True. :)

If I, God forbid it, had something like that, I would take the route of prayopaveśa if possible. Although would they stop it by force-feeding?

I don't support any kind of suicide. Life is a war, so we should fight until death. When we extremely defeated or loss our hope, we may expect death but we should not suicide.

I don't think they could force feed you. "Hunger strikes" have been used for milennia. And consider anorexics... Karen Carpenter for one. You can survive about 30-40 days without food, but no more than 3-4 without water.

Why should we? More to the point, why should I be forced to just because of your opinion?

Easy cowboy, we all gave our opinions. His is no less valid just because it's different.

Many years ago, one my uncles had to manage what strength he had left to pull the wires and tubes out that were keeping him alive. It's a travesty that someone has to go to this level when they've decided they want to end their own lives! It's the flip side of that ridiculous coin about reverence for life, that does nothing more than increase the amount of human misery!

So you are in favour of assisted suicide on compassionate grounds?

I support the right to terminate one's life, but there are some issues that demand some consideration. We are now facing the end of the babyboomer generation, the largest number of elderly people in history, and more importantly the largest old to young ratio. I have worked as a nurse in a psychogeriatric ward, and that was a shocking revelation. My day often began with requests for assisted death, and I could see that the requests were very understandable. The problem I see on the horizon is that companies running old folks homes will be predominantly private enterprise. Decisions will be made on the basis of profit and loss. I expect that once it is legal to terminate a client if they have signed a form, those forms will be filled out by the service provider if the client is not economically viable compared to other potential clients. Anyone who doubts this is woefully misinformed about human nature and business. My experience as a nurse left me in no doubt that doctors have been choosing to terminate patients for many decades (on compassionate grounds, nevertheless illegally), but this remains an in-house secret.

Given that there are (and always have been) consistent reports of abuse of the elderly in care facilities (and I saw enough myself to know how it goes), the legalizing of assisted suicide will certainly also result in expedient murder of undesirable clients.

That does not mean I oppose legal euthanasia; to the contrary, my experiences have convinced me that I will avail myself of the opportunity in preference to unnecessary vegetating in misery for a decade. I am just realistic and awake enough to see that it will also mean that a lot of old folk will be 'put down'.
