Atheism needs to establish a church of atheism to strengthen love and humanity, and to unite its followers.
I personally wouldn't promote it. Besides there's a lot of fine atheist organizations that already do a good job. One of those is The Brights who's charter fits exactly in with your vision and mine as well.

Humm...... Let me guess; you must be some kinda theist? because I can't imagine an actual atheist coming up with such an idea so absurd.

That would be about as senseless as forming a team of guys that do not play any sports! (LOL)

Some friends have ridiculed my suggestion.

The Christian church does not only have the function of prayer. It also has functions that the atheist church must also perform.

Free functions:

The function of individual and social psychology is of a practical consolation type, similar to Anthony Robbins and Joyce Meyer.

Encouraging economic activities where people help and guide each other.

Helping the poor and helping the fallen and helping marriage and helping unity.

Prayer itself is a collective self-induction and is also useful for atheists. An example of an atheist prayer:
(We, the people of the Church of Humanism, will triumph. We will help the poor. Voltaire and John Stuart Mill were dear and noble. Freedom is dear and noble. We support freedom. We are strong and will become stronger because we are free. We are merciful and compassionate. We always triumph because we study and investigate. The world will become better and better for us. We respect reason and science and emotions and lust. Sexy women are respected by us. Women's freedom is respected by us....)

This kind of collective prayer makes people psychologically and emotionally better able to act in the way of reason, science, human rights, and society, and lead happier individual lives.

This kind of church functions both like a party and like a club. It is free. It unites. It is against ancient and heavenly religions. It is against slavery. It is against dictatorship.

Sounds like you haven't heard of Sunday Assembly:

It's for anyone, not just atheists, but it's often described as church minus the religion.

Also, I've felt welcomed as an atheist to my local UU church. I stopped going because even though I didn't object to it, it wasn't really my thing, but it can be a great place for a new atheist who misses the community aspects of their former church.

Who/what is the atheist praying to?

In the Christian church, prayers are sentences or poems that the speaker requests of God, but in the atheist church, these are requested of nature and the univers, and of human himself.

These have effects such as self-suggestion, self-hypnosis, self-healing, soothing, and willpower-building.

If you look around I think atheists have already done that. There's also the Church of Satan which actually an atheist group with a little dark cosplay.

But are atheists seeking atheist companionship? Religious groups have common beliefs, values and interests. What do atheists have in common?
