Atheistism:a down-side to it?

Oh, and hearing all the time "I'll pray for you" as if you have a brain tumor.

Some of us theists get that too. It happens when you're not part of the "in" religious crowd I guess.

your answe ris in reverse. atheists dont accept 2+2=4. because they dont accept the universe as a thing created at a certain point in time acting on timespace, therefore having to be created by God. the atheists say it is 2+2=5

Lol!

Give me one good reason why the origin of the universe has to be a god?

I do not find that being an athiest is a problem at funerals/weddings like mentioned at the start. My parents come from 2 versions of christianity, so instead of only 1 half of my family hating my religious views, I now have both sides hating me.

Seriously, a large percentage of people will declare themselves religious but do not have any true beliefs, so they have a small respect for those who buck.

Downside? mabye the higher beings with higher science that are responsible for this world don't care where your soul goes after the place you didn't care about. mabye you will become nothing important. what about spiritual morality as taught by christ? what about higher mind as taught by the Buddha? what about the absolute law of this earth, whatever you concieve it to be from Islam? What about the divergent paths leading to a supreme godhead in hInduism, which in that aknowledges that other things exist besides monotheistic dogma which may have scared you off of "something". Crowley's stab at atheism was the statement in the book of the Law that "Do what thou wilt will be the whole of the Law"...this applies to something, but we cannot be the absolute destroyer of all injustice when we do what we will with ourselves as a carrier of justice. why? because of the law of idiots trying to own god. There are very much too many schools of atheism, thelemites, and the like spawned because of a complete misapplication of this statement. PM me if you are an idiot, in regards to this statement about crowley, but don't waste my time.

Not that I can think of! The only people that know I'm an atheist are my immediate family and my friends. I'm pretty sure if I told most of my relatives I'm an atheists they'd be shocked and try to convert me or something.

Surely the fact that we don't believe can be a down side in itself. For example when someone close to you dies it is obviously a very upsetting time. I feel religion, if nothing else, can be a comfort to believe they have gone to 'a better place' and a way of coping with grief whereas for a lot of atheists we do not have that. In a way I wish I did believe just for things like that.
Although it is indeed some things like that (deaths etc) which has contributed to making me turn again other religions.

The fact that some of my distant family try desperately to turn me Anglican is just frustrating because it becomes grinding and I always end up getting short or angry with them. I'm sick of being told I'll go to hell or that im living a pointless life. My idea of a pointless life is surrendering my brain to an ancient book to follow a false belief... my words to theists... back off

The only downside I can really see is not being able to be who you are without this fear of backlash. My mom's southern baptist and I "came out of the closet" a few years ago about being atheist...it obviously hasn't gone over well. I've lost count how many times she's said I'm going to hell, she prays for my soul, I'm possessed by the devil. I'm not ashamed of who I am, but it can be very disheartening when it's your own mother.

That's a disgusting response to have. This is why Christians annoy the hell out of me at times (the very very avid believers, though that's usually catholics) because they are so narrow minded. Worse as it's your mother!
In the UK I think families care a lot less who is what in the family beliefes wise, however she should be ashamed of herself. Disgraceful.

i'm quite sorry giz

This is all very interesting.
There was a time when the word Athiest terrified me but no more and this is the reason why.
I know now that whatever you believe in here on earth or even if you believe in nothing it won't matter because when a Human dies its spirit with all its intelligence and memories leaves the body here on earth to be buried and the Spirit lives on in the After Life.
I can't prove these things yet I know them to be true because for the past 20 years everyday i am talking to my relatives and others in the after life and so this to me is just Scientific and I am not sure how I can prove any of these things yet I believe anyone could prove this if they would only develop their Psychic abilities and search for the truth themselves and learn to communicate with their friends and relatives in the spirit world.
I would like to add that my relatives in the Spirit World are no nicer to me from the Spirit World than they were when they walked the Earth and now that I have opened up this line of communication with them I don't think I will ever be able to shut them up and in fact they may be hanging around here annoying me until the day I die.
What I have learned is there doesn't seem to be a way to get rid of them and there doesn't seem to be anyone up there who can come here and take them away and this all causes me to wonder if any Spirit in the Spirit World has dominance over another?

The biggest downside as shown, is the prejudice recieved from "bible belters" that someone without religion is immoral, cares for nothing, and if you can't convert them they should be removed from society to prevent them from spreading there "disease". Though they obviously can't be removed they should be treated as anything they say is unimportant.

Yes, the only downside is fundamentalist Christians pushing their Bible down your throat and trying to convert you to save you from the mythological place known as "Hell"!

I can think of one down-side to atheism: not enough holidays! ;)

As an atheist, I still had all the secular holidays.

And in addition, I celebrated the birthday of the Earth on October 22nd. :D

You can make any holidays you like...even ones meant as a joke!
