That has not been the experience elsewhere in the world.
And gun owners are the ones most likely to be shot -- often by their own guns.
No, guns don't make us safer. Tough laws and militarized police don't make us safer. And it's the Right that's been promoting policies likely to lead to an authoritarian police state. Sorry to be all sciency again, but those are the stats, and that's been the experience elsewhere in the world.
What is it with you and atheists? Do you think there's some vast, left-wing, atheist conspiracy to enslave us and let criminals run wild in the streets? I think you've been watching too much Fox news.
And what's with this "Democrat's inner cities?" It's not democratic policies that made guns so easy to obtain and created all the criminals.
In countries with good gun control laws citizens don't feel threatened, crime is low, and police don't fear the people and shoot at the slightest unexpected move.
I wonder what would happen if we treated this as a medical problem, or allowed regulated usage.
Oh, wait, it's already been tried, and drug usage, overdoses and crime all went down....
The USA is a unique place in space and time. Its history is very young compared to the older cultures around the world, such as in Europe and Asia. The US has less connection to any distant past; old world traditions. The Middle East is still fighting for ancient history. This allowed the US to start like a clean slate. Immigration from all places creates a melting pot with the America Culture written on the fly.
What America never had, since its declaration of independence, was monarchy control, where a monarch, via big Government meddling, controlled everything. The monarchy model was common to most if not all the old world cultures. It could create a sentimental attachment to King or Queen, that made central control easier by tradition; Monarchy, peasant and serfs; socialism. The Democrats held onto slavery the longest; Civil War, since slaver made you a mini-monarch with control over the life and death of people; divine right of kings.
The US, by being a clean slate, was designed to be a place for free citizens; growing middle class, with minimal central control; Small Government and States Rights. The early US was also a country with lots of natural resources and wide frontiers, so guns were a necessary tool for hunting and self protection. There were all types of potential threats in the wide open frontier; wild animals, Indians, bandits and even corrupt law enforcement in remote places. Citizens could defend themselves or if need be, form a militia and take over the role of law enforcement; hire a sherif.
Some of the modern problems the USA now faces is connected to crime, which is now condoned by the Left. Their crime numbers via FBI statistics were horrible. Their solution was to doctor the numbers, by not making a paper record; ignores crime and get better numbers on paper. This has not altered the victim numbers, but has caused these to rise. Victims are not important to the Left since they create new ones each day. It is the appearance of less crime on paper.
There is also immigration from third world countries. Many of these have a type of corrupt monarchy control; dictator. The immigrants from monarchy controlled countries is a problem in the sense even the good people who come from such places can be controlled by authority behavior. There is also drug and gang problems based on the third world monarchy model in a microcosm; power through money and violence.
These and many other things are all potential threats to the free citizen experiment. The First and Second Amendment are about freedom of religion and the right to bear arms to make sure free people can stay free. Religion allows the mind to stay free and guns help the body stay free. Back in the day the crime ridden streets would be taken back and the criminal hung or run out of town. The Left does not want that since they relate better to the crime, since it is an excuse to grow bigger government. They do not wish to share any power with free citizens.
Two of the worse decisions away from experiment in freedom was to add the Federal income tax and allowing Senators to be elected by popular vote. The first was about money and power and growing big government. Even the income tax was not enough for their power lust so they borrowed with deficit spending; now over $30 trillion, to enslave the citizens into the future. We are not free from that debt of the monarchs, building monuments to themselves; pork.
Senators used to be chosen by the State Legislature to make sure the state was represented, by the best people. They chose in a more professional way like hiring a CEO. The popular voter makes it more like popularity contest, with personality more important than competence; expect deficits. Any stupid actor can create deficits. Only the competent can balance a budget. No company; Apple, would allow a popular vote for its CEO, since this position takes unique skills and not everyone has the skill to know what these skills are. Instead most will vote for the best actors playing a role of a competent CEO.The actor mentality caused many Senators to strive for National appeal, with the states rights further losing out.
The right to bear arms is one of the last guide rails. Arguments about crime to get rid of guns, miss the main point which is too much big Government is the worse of the two evils, since this will regress all things. Deficit spending shows were are not led by the best but by Prima Dona actors who lack the skills to work for the people in an efficient manner.
