Most of us here are average. Even those of us who are exceptionally good at one thing or the other are unlikely to go down in history.

Are you bothered by being likely forgotten in time? If you're not now, were you ever?
My name is known all over the country. ;)

Average? Really?

Average human, sure, but humans are not average. We are the paramount species of this planet, probably the only one that exists on every continent, in every corner of the planet. Have you talked to a Martian lately? Met someone who was from Venus? No? Humans are now the apex of this planet's evolutionary line, our intelligence and wisdom unmatched by anything else here.

If you really think humans are average, you need to look at the mirror again, and thank God that you happened to have the right DNA sequence that allows you to be what many people consider to be God incarnate.

Humans, and I mean all humans, are magnificent.
We are pathetic weaklings who just cannot survive worth a damn or crap next to this little guy.

The soul and the Self at its core isn't bothered by much. It's ego and personality that gets bothered.

I won't have any descendants, I won't be passing on my Y- chromosome (T-M184) but I have two grandnephews and a half-nephew who could possibly if they have sons. Otherwise the line dies with me. There are many other men with the same Y chromosome but I'm talking about my specific family line. That's the genetics of it. The memory part is my memory will probably die with my nieces and nephews, unless they keep talking about "Unk" to their kids. With that generation my memory will probably finally die. I don't think very much of myself in life, so it follows that there won't be much to think of me after. So no, I'm not really bothered by it.

It is one of my biggest struggles. Clinically, I had/have delusions of grandeur. Without my meds, I truly believe I’m going to start a new cult, an anarchist commonwealth, as well as be a famous musician. With my meds, it’s only some days I believe that. With the meds, most days I see that I am a wee little man. I am struggling with self esteem issues now that I see I am average or even below average.

Hey! I get to borrow from one of my signature lines :)

"There comes a redeemer, and he slowly too, fades away"

The truth is, the most consequential people we're aware of: Buddha, Jesus, Muhammad, Genghis Khan, whomever you can think of will all be forgotten in 100,000 years, and probably only 5 or 10 thousand years. So from the perspective of the age of the universe, we're all going to be forgotten.

Nope. Not bothered at all. Death is the great forgetter of all things.

I wouldn't mind leaving something behind that would still mean something to people after I was gone. But even if that ever happened, and even if people knew where it came from, it's not like they would be remembering me because they never knew me in the first place, just something I did.

"RF the musical was written by Quagmire".

--- "who's Quagmire"?

"He's the guy who wrote RF the musical".

See what I mean?

I think it's basically the same thing with all famous people.

Even being remembered gives them no joy
when they're dead. Similarly, being forgotten
causes one no harm. So I've no worries.

I don't mind dying in obscurity. But I feel that I would like to be remembered, at least for a while, in small circles I found and important to me. Friends, family, the Pagan community.

It does not worry me at all.
I have found it a learning experience however as I get older and see the younger ones grow up and take the place of those who are dead or too old to do what they used to do or be what they used to be.
Different generations have their own heroes and front runners and average people. So many people whom we might admire for one reason or another and they are all replicated in other countries and cultures and generations and even in the next town or street.
Nothing special about me and that is a good learning experience which I knew anyway but needed to know better.
Our lives are so sort really and we realise that when we get a bit older and look back.
Pink Floyd might encapsulate that feeling but going beyond that to a place of gratitude for it all and for everyone and everything is better than being jealous of others or sad because we are not like others.
