Babies make moral judgments

Sgt. Pepper

All you need is love.
This article caught my eye. It's relevant to those theists who think God is a pre-requisite for morality. The babies show religion isn't required. It's a short read: Babies Are a Lot More Judgmental of Moral Transgression Than We Realized

"A stare down is a much less developed form of punishment, but if the authors are right, it could be the earliest sign of a moral compass in children, one that is possibly more inherent than learned."

The article confirms to me that human beings aren't born with a sinful nature and aren't prone to immoral behavior, as I was taught when I was a Christian. It also confirms to me that neither I, nor any other person, needs to follow God and obey him in order to be moral and make the right choices in our lives. Now that I'm no longer a Christian, I believe it's self-defeating to believe that we require an all-powerful deity's supervision and the threat of eternal damnation to keep us from being immoral or even prevent us from being violent towards others. IOW, people don't need the fearmongering tactics of Christianity to be moral and civilized human beings.

It's very common for theists to ask atheists "well, without God, where do you get your morality?"
And that would be true. As with the baby, God gives us the original DNA of morality. As we "mature" and "grow up" we rationalize our own morality against that which He implanted IMO.

Instinct. It's in all creatures.

Oh right i remember that next time i am told by a theist that being atheist i have no morality.

To be honest, I know atheists who are more moral than Christians and other religious theists who claim to follow the God of the Bible. As I've pointed out before, Christians aren't morally superior to non-Christians. Christians lie, steal, commit adultery, divorce, remarry, lust, and fornicate just like non-Christians. In a lot of ways, Christians are no different than the non-Christians they judge for their so-called sins against God. It seems to me that these Christians should be more concerned about the plank in their own eye before they worry about the speck of dust in someone else's eye. As Gandhi said, "I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ." I also like this quote from Brennan Manning, "The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians: who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, walk out the door, and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.” I think some Christians should be reminded that "Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones."

I would pit my morality against most Christians anytime. In my experience so many of them are of the attitude that "god is on my side so i can do what i like and god will forgive me"

Humans have been moral animals since they first evolved. Why? Morality is not a religious trait but a common social animal trait. Religion stole it, bastardised it to exclude anyone not of their particular faith.
