On a lark last year, at the age of 51 I decided to try to finish my associates degree which I had neglected for 20 years. Now at 52 I'm about 2 weeks from finishing hopefully and I will be starting a new course of study

I had no idea what I was going to do for a bachelor's in all these decades

Since I'm kind of isolated, online was my only real choice.

And the time to get a new school for fall it was almost up and next thing I know I'm majoring in "religious and cultural studies".

I tell people I'm agnostic which isn't necessarily true but it keeps people from prying

I was Methodist as a kid, always going to church and helping with Sunday school and the little kids.

I had been through bahai, Unitarian universalist, vipassana meditation, episcopalian, quaker, a little Roman Catholic and next thing I know I'm getting anointed into the Eastern Orthodox Church with thoughts of becoming a monk and I'm deeply involved in it for 6 years. But life moves on and I got into Osho, then I was Mr science for 10 years, and now I've been kind of reconciling different things.

I've been on the internet since 1989 and so I'm basically an internet netizen. It helps me communicate better and I enjoy being able to communicate with people around the world. it's never got old to me.

My classes start August 19th and I decided I should get into an environment that's religious people talking because my mindset has not been religious stuff for a long time and I feel like I should get going in it.

I'm also a bit scared and this is my first time being in a proper Forum in many many years, being lazy with Facebook and Google+ and other massive generic things. Nice to find a real forum.

A touch of Quaker, stuck, huh? Good. You've delved into quite the faith journey and still padding that pavement. Good for you. We should never consider ourselves beyond exploring and learning, IMO.

I took college course years after too… (I’m 70 now) - you can do it!! Probably better than what you expect.

70? No way! You and your wife look so young.

@simplify3 I wish you every luck and success with your studies. I am a firm believer in adult education regardless of age or background, I once had a friend who did some prison time for drugs. When he came out his family disowned him and he woke up on A Christmas morning on a park bench.
He swore "never again"

A few weeks later he went and saw the the head teacher at his old school. The man gave him some advice and coaching and he managed to get a place on a diploma program. On the strength of that he got into a university and took his degree, later he gained a masters.

He then got into journalism, had a book published and has worked for the U.N. He eventually went into teaching at a London university which he did until he retired.

Not a bad story for an ex-con. Good luck to all mature students.

Thank you! I surprised myself as I haven't though of religion in years and yet when I was looking at possibilities, it jumped out at me. I just hope it's not biting off more than i can chew but I can but try!
