Ban smacking?

A lead story on tonight's national news bulletin is to do with banning smacking. The pitch is: "fresh move to ban smacking as doctors link it to child homicide".

Is it reasonable to ban smacking?

While I agree that smacking should be banned, I am not sure banning necromancy would work .

I smacked my son's hand twice the whole time he has been alive. It was when he was completely out of control in one of his fits and went to hit one of us. I smacked it swiftly, and it stopped him both times. I think the second time I did it, he got the message that it was not okay to physically attack somebody just because you're royally ticked off.

My daughter never once was spanked or smacked. She catches on very quickly with responsibility and is remarkably self-disciplined. The most she has ever done is sulk, which neither myself nor hubbie believe merits a spanking.

Of course, now, all our children are teenagers. Our parenting methods have changed over the years, and even if one of the kids were to attack one of us, we wouldn't smack their hands. I have a feeling that our Black Belt daughter would take them out, however, and that would be enough.

I wish there was banned smacking when I was a kid. I was always getting spanked or smacked for bothering my brother and sisters.

LOL, when I saw the thread title, I thought it meant chewing with your mouth open. Regional dialects are fun.

Anyway, I don't know how I'd feel about such a ban. Some parents go to far. However, I can't help but think of people getting accused of child abuse for slapping a toddler's hand when they try to touch the hot stove.

I have touched the hot stove for crying out loud, and I turned out ok. No one died because of that.
