Bars and Food

Now, I am not a barfly or anything. I do occasionally go out drinking socially though. This happened last weekend and I realized something. So few bars by me sell food. I mean, yea, they sell chips and junk. I want real food though. A big greasy burger with half-cooked bacon and a quarter-inch thick slab of cheddar on it. French fries as thick as my thumb. Hot wings by the bucket. Where have all these items gone? Did I just land myself in an area that likes to drink more than they like to eat or is the old fashioned "Bar & Grill" a dying breed?

There's a local dive that my husband likes to frequent in our town. That place offers free food buffet style to it's patrons. If you're drinking, you can eat. And you can eat well: chili dogs, hot wings, nachos w/cheese, waffle fries.....you name it, although the menu changes as food availability changes.

We have a few more bar and grills in our town that offer a LOT of different foods, and those are usually the most popular places to hang out at on any night of the week. Greasy food, lots of beer and liquor, pool tables, packed shoulder to shoulder while a local garage band is playing loudly - we still got those.

So I wouldn't say they're a dying breed. Then again, I'm in southern Illinois which many times is considered quite the redneck country. ;)

Fun fact: legally, there's no such thing as a "bar" in the province of Ontario. To get a liquor licence, you have to be a "restaurant", and to be a restaurant, you have to serve full meals.

This means that even our most drinking-oriented bars will have some sort of food available. Legally, even night clubs have to have food available (though often, nobody will ever order it and it will be pretty crappy food).

So... short answer: there's no shortage of bars that serve food around here.

Our bars are more often sports bars, so they offer the big screen TV, the greasy burger, the wings, nachos, etc. What they really lack, though, is a pleasant dining environment.

There's a few bars close to me that serve food, but only one I'm interested in going to. It's called "Uncle Buck's Bar and Grill" and from what I've heard and what little I've seen, they serve really good food (especially breakfast food like steak and eggs and such). I keep telling Tim that we should get my mom to babysit one time and we just go out to the bar for dinner, drinks, and karaoke some night. Just a fun adult night out.

Y'all should do that..(just have the baby sitter keep the kids over night and bring the food home and eat in bed together ;))

Pick the kids up in the morning bright and early.:)

Can't brain. Has dumb.
There are still a lot of bar and grill chains out there.
Chains suck though

I prefer local-owned/run pubs that you won't get anywhere else
The family-run kind

There's this place here that's nice n quiet, has good booze, and very very good food.
Burgers the size of your head
Bowls of chips enough to feed a small army. (and the odd leggy)

and all for fairly reasonable prices - which of course is what keeps em going and keeps people coming back.

There's a pub near me that offers nachos, hot dog and burger all mashed up together and served in a dog bowl. Got to say, I've never bothered with it myself...

There are many bars (non-franchised) in my area famous for their salty roast beef sandwiches and chicken wings. Methinks you could sojourn out and find one that sells good food without entailing too much trouble. Unless of course your from the deep sticks.

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
Here in East Texas there are lots of bars that sell good food as well. One nearby is called Jakes and it's a martini bar that also sells FABULOUS appetizers and platters of mostly Middle Eastern finger food/cuisine (often the same thing). YUM.

There are lots of restaurants around here that also have a separate bar area - but you can order dinner to be served in the bar area. In fact, we're going to eat sushi tonight in a place like that.

Now - I absolutely CANNOT WAIT to get my hands on some sashimi, and a Kirin lager!

My wife and I drive an hour and a half each friday night (both ways) to play at a pub where they feed the musicians. That's of course not the reason we do it, that would not make it worth it. We do it because there's a world reknown fiddle champion from Ireland that plays there and her husband is an amazing guitar player, so we go play with them to learn from them. The free food is a nice perk.
