Basics of fear

Hello all
What actually is fear in your opinion?Just an instinctive emotion or something more describable?Describe its delusional nature by which- people get effected by it involuntarily and subconsciously while restraining from it;its deeper relation with hatred, lust or other emotions. What primarily is responsible for it? Desire?Attachment?Selfishness? What in your own opinion is the way to deal with fear and its self replicating nature.I intend to read your personal craftings in addition to any scriptural knowledge or deductions related to this(if existent).

It began as reflex.
You should be able to spot something and then.....RUN!
As a species such an inherited response is needed.

Of course we humans have expanded soooooo much.....fear bleeds over to almost all that we do.

Fear is a natural reaction that our species, like many others, has evolved so that we will be more likely to avoid danger. In that respect it is useful for survival.

Unfortunately, as with many instinctive responses, fear often occurs in inappropriate contexts and causes a lot of trouble. That negative sort of fear is related to delusion, in the sense that delusional thinking can cause people to be afraid of things that are not dangerous or even real. And fear can lead people to act in undesirable ways. When delusional fear becomes habitual, all sorts of negative reactions and neuroses can result.

Most wisdom traditions agree that the chief fear is the fear of death. That anxiety causes people all sorts of vexation and leads to negative behaviors as people try to drown out their fear by indulging in sensual excess or superstitious beliefs. Different traditions have somewhat different answers to this problem, but the most common is to reframe the question to show how the fear is unfounded. For example, in Buddhism the fear of death is based on the false apprehension that one has an essential existence that can be taken away.

To expand on Vishvavajra, I would say that fear is the opposite of attachment. "I want this NOT to be with/about/near me". The Fear of Death is conquered with Kali by her death-clad nature, which is to show that death itself is a good thing in regards our egos.

Fear is when awareness spins in a chakra below the muladara, second or third one I think. It's a vibratory rate. The keys to overcoming it is to replace it with higher vibrations, like bhakti, or self-confidence.

It's natural, but of the lower instinctive nature. So repressing it doesn't work, but replacing it does. So positive affirmations such as "All my need will always be met." will overcome the fear of not surviving.

What are other lower instinctive nature?
Are all these lower nature cannot be suppressed, but can only be replaced by the higher ones?
What are the higher ones?

Fear opposite of attachment...never thought this way
So fear is just a maya like attachment...

Yes. When you hate something, it unbalances you like greed or lust or pride might unbalance you.

I don't want to toot my own horn, but Kali is supreme at dispelling fear, her hands literally say "Fear not". Shiva, Hanuman and Narasimha do well at this as well, and in Buddhism, Tara and Kwan Yin do so too. You don't need to live in fear of fear!

This article The Chakras - वेद Veda explains consciousness as it pertains to chakras. It's pretty simple, but gives a good overview. Ones below the mukadara are considered base, and the ones above are 'higher' or spiritual. Ganesha's seat is at the doorway, on the muladara. One of his names refers to the gatekeeper of dharma. The trick here, of course, is to reprogram, or, in younger people, simply program the subconscious mind to behave in 'higher' ways. A goofd analogy for that is in training a dog, or cat. Those trained in rough manners generally turn out acting roughly.

Really mature souls live in the higher ones.

Bhakti definitely helps to soften the soul's attributes.

In my life fear has arisen primarily in instances where I feel threatened (Either physically or emotionally) coupled with a perception of being unable to control the situation .

As such for me fear arises as a result of an attachment to a feeling of control over my life and a failure to practice right view.

Thankfully it doesn't happen often but when I've been lying in bed at night unable to sleep and in borderline panic mode I've found mindfulness meditation can help me through observing my feelings and restoring right view of the situation so it no longer feels out of my control.
