Beef Tallow in Money

The new British 5 pound note is produced with the use of beef tallow, and may contain animal products.

I've also heard that many Hindu temples have stopped accepting these notes as payment, or in donation boxes. Hopefully the government can rectify it, but it will be difficult to get bills out of circulation one they're out there. Not too bright.

This is insane. Why would they do this? And especially considering the extra cost it takes to produce it while we could be headed for inflation.

I had no idea. I never use my ATM-Debit card anymore in any store because of the security risks. So I started using cash a lot instead of debit. But this is really depressing.

I guess I can switch from paper money to coins. Here in the U.S., we have $1 dollar coins, and they are nice coins, oddly I have been buying $25 dollar rolls of $1 dollar coins before reading this, I suppose I will be buying more now.

Is tallow also used in the plastics of PC, laptops, and smartphones?

It seems tallow is used in many polymers used in many plastics and most plastic bank notes around the world.
so it might turn up any where.
The bank of England are changing it in the £5 note
, but as they lasts so long it might be years before they clear out of the system. Foreign ones would take even longer because there are so many more of them.

I shudder to think about Indian currency. We are in the process of demonetizing the higher denomination and introducing new ones to curb tainted money and terrorism. It is creating huge problems here. India would not be able to face a second demonetization.

I don't think anything is 'safe', and I wish the manufacturers were more sensitive to finding alternates. With the rennet in cheese issue, it did finally change substantially, but I'm not sure if it was from people pressure or just economics in finding cheaper alternatives.

I put this in the Hindu DIR on purpose to discuss how it affects Hindus, and in particular, Hindu temples. As individuals, we do what we can, and most of us realise it is impossible to live an animal-product free lifestyle, given what many things like plastics, car equipment, might be made of. But money is a bit different, because it is so commonly touched. Remnants of meat would be 'forbidden' in a Hindu temple, and the belief is it would carry an impure vibration. All this being said, non-vegetarian Hindus do come into the temples, certainly with meat remnants in their innards given what is known about digestion rates. Still, almost all the Hindus I know who do partake in non-veg will be vegetarian the day of their going to the temple, for 24 hours or more.

So sarcastic comments from non-Hindus or people looking to belittle the Hindui beliefs about this should start a thread outside of this DIR.

Thank you, fantome, for pointing out its not just in England. I've never liked those slippery see-through Canadian notes anyway, but this casts new light on whether or not I'll switch to all credit card use.

Be careful! With DEBIT CARDS if they hack the card like what happened in Target stores here in the US, they can and will empty your checking account.

I do not even like using CREDIT CARDS anymore due to constant stealing/hacking when being used. Oddly, even before reading this I started using US $1 dollar coins.

I use Canadian $2 dollar coins in BC - or the $1 coin Canadian. Can be used in temples.

So why not coins in temples? I like the feel of coins.

In Canada I mix up the names for these $2 and $1 dollar coins, Loonie, Toonie, my wife has to remind me. But the US $1 dollar coin is very pretty, I love it and can use that in the temples.

These look good when dropping in the temple donation box, hundi, etc.. makes a dana sound.

I like the teaching moment for little kids with hundis. Here, a lot of money goes on the aarti tray and aftewr everyone receives flame, its transferred to the hundi. Little kids love helping with that transfer, and its a great time to explain things, depending on age. Bills work best for dakshina though.

I've already seen several petitions online regarding this. It seems to get a lot of support not only from religious Hindus and Muslims but also many secular and nontheistic vegans/vegetarians.

certainly not , ....what also concerns me is that so many comercial products contain traces if not large dolops of animal fats , many household products , soaps , shampoo , conditioners , perfumes , toothpaste also plastic bags and packaging not to mention over the counter and prescribed medicines , ......yes agreed ''not very clever'' !!!

what is also not very clever is that although plactics in any form are longer lasting than paper what ever the use may be it is a false economy as the plastics are more poluting as they take years , ...if not thousands of years to bio degrade meanwhile the micro particals of all this plastic crap is found in the innards of birds and fish probably also in the innards of our own children affecting their health , .....

why oh why cant we be happy to live simply , ..when a paper note wears out just print another , ....after all there are many here that could do with the work , .....

funnyest thing is that I have seen many of these new notes in circulation that have been defaced it looks like people are trying to see if they realy are indestructable ...?

there was a time during the early 1900s when the sufferagette movement deliberatly defaced coins by stamping them .....

perhaps we should stamp ''unethical and unclean'' on these horrible notes ! ...and every other contaminated product , ...

Unfortunately we have the other argument of over-harvesting the forests. Though I am in favor of using paper products instead of plastic or styrofoam as the lesser of evils.

I believe the internet has been a boon to our forest health, simply because of the reduction in newsprint, which was once the largest produced product by far.

please dont forget that fast growing trees are grown as a crop for paper making and building wood supplies, and that paper can also be recycled , ...fortunatly in this country we are not chopping down ancient woodland it is now protected carefuly nurtured and even in some places being replanted as permenant woodland and wildlife habitat , ...
