Former Sikh here. I learned about and practiced Sikhi on/off between 2002 and April 2016.
There is no getting around it; the turban and uncut hair (all hair) is part of Sikhi. It is only mandatory for fully initiated Sikhs (Sikhs who have taken amrit). For some Sikh groups, you can't be a Sikh without initiation. But for mainstream Sikhi, initiation is purely voluntary and you can still be a regular Sikh and cut your hair without it, technically.
Sikhi is beautiful, no doubt. For some people, the longer they're Sikh and the more devout they become, keeping their hair and wearing turban is just a natural extension of their Sikhi, devotion and love for Guru Sahib.
So, like the previous poster said, it's too early to be thinking too much about the hair and turban.
