Being Offended

A Vestigial Mote

Agree completely. There is no effect worth a damn in being offended. And being offended, honestly, gives credence to thing, when there need not necessarily be any. Unfortunately I don't think there are many around on this site who truly understand that. This place (and even some of the forum rules) often remind me very much of the sarcastic, whiny parts of this man's routine.

Comedy is as subjective as taking offense is. I found the routine entertaining personally, and think he made some salient points. Here's the thing I think most people forget: societal and cultural mores change, and the process of change is what teaches society what the new mores are/will be. There's too much focus being made on offense in our society (US), IMO, and it's dangerous. Someone says something that hasn't been socially acceptable for 3 decades, society craps its panties, and the speaker starts whining about his "freedom of speech", which no one here in the US seems to understand any longer. Maybe we should start jailing people for saying stupid things (like blacks were happy being slaves, or gays want to recruit your children) and see if people will start understanding the Constitution again. Bottom line: make sure you're prepared to take the heat for anything you're about to say. Because someone, somewhere, isn't going to like it.

Agree? Disagree? Why? Discuss!

Depending on how far you take it, I can both agree or disagree. There is a difference between saying something and someone gets offended and saying something with the explicit purpose to offend someone. Usually dislike the latter, but there are exceptions, such as comedy. I do think people are a bit sensitive at times, though. And that includes myself.

I also like how the "similar threads" thing mentions the "Allowing the serious offenders to live" thread. Taken in the context of this thread, that just sounds so wrong :p.
