I think that, for the most part, it is because one is not working from facts, therefore there is a need to build a consensus. This is especially true when dealing with topics that cannot be falsified.Generally, what is the root of needing/wanting others to think that you're right?

Wow. that goes against everything in the culture I was bred out of. it thrives on disagreements.Evolutionarily, because agreement strengthened social bonds, and social bonds strengthened tribal survival.

Science for example is all about debate. refining other people's theories, debating the theories of others and attempting to refute them, debating all theories, all details and opinions. challenging each others conclusions till the end.
and then doing it all over again.
