Being Right

At first it was a wanting of others to believe I was right because I wasn't comfortable with what I believed.

Now I don't care if others believe I am right or not only I control what I believe and no one will believe exactly as me. I do get exicited when some one likes my beliefs or compares it to theirs as it indicates to me I am being taken seriously by another individual.

Individual's are important to me.

Generally, what is the root of needing/wanting others to think that you're right?
I think that, for the most part, it is because one is not working from facts, therefore there is a need to build a consensus. This is especially true when dealing with topics that cannot be falsified.

That said, there was a time when most everyone thought the world was flat, so there are some pitfalls in using consensus opinion.

For the most part, I don't care if people think I am right or wrong. I am just happy if I get them thinking... however briefly.

Evolutionarily, because agreement strengthened social bonds, and social bonds strengthened tribal survival.

And because you like that I'm right.

People who don't agree with me are wrong, of course. They're wont to make wrong decisions and take wrong actions and generally screw everything up.

So, naturally, I'm concerned.:sarcastic

Wow. that goes against everything in the culture I was bred out of. it thrives on disagreements.
The way we see it. agreeing too much means lack of productivity, challenge, and eventually losing one's edge.
Science for example is all about debate. refining other people's theories, debating the theories of others and attempting to refute them, debating all theories, all details and opinions. challenging each others conclusions till the end.
and then doing it all over again.

And because you like that I'm right.
We don't like people who are right. we like people who are wise. being right in essence 90% of the time means you are wrong.
now, a wise person. would probably be right all the time.

Did you know that about 83,37% of the statistics posted in the internet without reference are , in fact, made-up?

I usually limit it to a practical literary proverb, mainly that over 90% of all material on the net is extra garbage on line, and that my favorite thing about the Internet is that you get to go into the private world of real creeps without having to smell them.

For me there is a thrill of vindication in being able to either persuade or browbeat someone into accepting a particular point or argument that I make. Maybe I am just a bit easily pleased.

I mean ancient tribes - groupthink and adhering to cultural scripts increased survival odds against other tribes in tough, warring landscapes. Not what KT meant, I guess, but the question made me think in macro terms. Here's an article about groupthink:

The Groupthink Syndrome | Uncommon Descent

There's another article I don't have time to find right now that describes tribal agreement better.

Oh, I was talking just to Kilgore there. :D

For me it isn't so much about being right as it is about proving the other guy wrong.

I really don't need to be right. I mean, I like it when I am right, but I am not going to assume that I am right especially when it comes to opinions. And if I am wrong, I learn when I find it out. Chalk it up to experience.
