Beit Shemesh ultra-orthodox Jews clash with police

Flexing political muscle. The object is to see how the government reacts. Any sign of weakness by authority will be exploited. It's a time honoured way of doing things in that part of the world.

If the government forces overreact then the instigators will inevitable claim victim status otherwise they will pursue their objective until bridled.

It's the same tactics that the Palestinians use.

I am off to Jerusalem shortly. It will be interesting time I suspect.

Send the riot cops in and hit everything that wears black.

They will probably leave if they get beat up every hour. And even if not its a good deed. Perhaps they can settle in... siberia and live a full live of shtetl experience. Oh wait they'd have to work there. Iam sorry thats a bad idea.

A 7 year old girl that doesnt dress modestly. They are clearly inventing their own mitzvot. Thats heresy. Sounds like someone wants to get beat up some more.

fanaticism has no place in a democratic society. It is becoming more and more clear that what Judaism is is losing out to what some want Judaism to be.

The Haredim must be stopped. Their twisted, fanatical, zealous version of Judaism betrays the core of everything that Jewish teaching is supposed to pass on.

So long as they don't serve simply as the low hanging fruit. Jews must stand for Israeli civil rights, and not simply against the groups and actions which prove politically easy to oppose.

Interesting story. What's your take on this?
The Israeli government must find a way to break down the ghetto mentality some ultra orthodox show. they segregate themselves from mainstream Israeli society, get on the nerves of secular Israeli society on some of the major issues of Israeli life, give a completely negative context to the Judaism the mainstream conservative Jews practice, which is based on social participation as opposed to the antagonizing some ultra orthodox show to the mainstream of Jewish and Israeli culture.

I had the unfortunate business running against these guys when I was participating in an archaeological excavation, they called us 'grave robbers' and we had the police secure our site because of their daily harassment. I have no context to place these people in modern Israeli society or life, they go against everything that modern Israel should promote.
when the state gradually provides more modern inclusion, whether if in the form of gay rights, opportunities for both sexes, etc. it seems that they try to enforce separation in their areas.
