Ben Carson: Education Secretary

Okay, so I have an open mind about Trump. I honestly do. . . Until he's actually created harmful policies I disagree with, why not give him a chance?

But Dr. Carson's name is currently being floated as a possible Secretary of Education appointment. Not assuming he'll get the position at this point, but how do we feel about this?

Personally, I think this could be Trump's biggest mistake of his transition, and it will go a long way toward my distrust of his presidency.

I know he owes Ben one for his support during the campaign, but I cannot fathom how poorly this appointment would go over.

Trump needs to demonstrate that he'll take his appointments seriously. . . And you can't take this man seriously, when he thinks the pyramids were grain silos for Joseph's famine rationing from Genesis.

He is a surgeon, right? I would much rather see someone in there with a formal history in upper level education in regards to politics, advising and legislation. I do not see Carson as that guy myself.

I'm guessing any one on Conservative side would be treated as not worthy of Secretary of Education from Progressive view.

The (ahem) good news is while we might debate it intellectually here, some Progressives will burn down Omaha Nebraska as a way to address their concerns over Carson for Secretary.

I never heard of Carson's personal religious beliefs before. Even so, he seems sensible, good head on his shoulders and straightforward on issues in the debates. His vision on the issues themselves impressed me.

I like to see him still in the political picture and would be a wonderful addition to Presidents Trump's cabinet imo.

I'll accept the other name I saw on the short list, William Evers.

I'd actually prefer Trump abolishing the post altogether over appointing Carson. He can justify this by saying the Feds have no business in education policy, so now all control goes to states. That's a common conservative position too.

With Ben Carson as Secretary of Education, History would be a lot more fun!

It's evidence to me that government in DC is back to business as usual. New boss is not too unlike the old boss.

Meet the new members of the Leadership Team for Transition. They will be deciding and working with President Elect Trump on consulting selections for cabinet and top level positions including likely selection of Ben Carson and others.

It's possible. Like a lot of people, there is excitment with new direction and leadership but time will always tell.

Anyone who believes the Earth is only 6,000 years old that the Egyptian Pyraminds were used for grain storage should never--EVER--have anything to do with deciding the course of education.

I am not a normally violent person. I really am not. But I won't feel bad if someone does an act of terror if they put creationism in our god damned biology classes.

Trumpcare is coming.

And even though I do not need to sign up for anything, as I can afford my HMO in retirement... yet, I will probably sign up for Trumpcare anyway because it looks like it is going to be a pretty good deal. Parts of it might be borrowed from Canada, which might not work out, but overall from what I hear this is going to be a great deal for people like me looking for catastrophic coverage.

My situation and mindset is, I know I will be dead sooner than later, probably a massive heart attack, but I am resigned to death and when I go, just going to go so what the hell. When I go, just go all the way - don't want to be like brainless. So if I know it is coming I will just fly to Varanasi and die in one of those cheap apartments looking out the balcony at the sun over the Ganges.

Or if I have the big one, plan on just being dead and my wife gets all the money. No hospital for me. Personally if I am going to die and can't make it to the airport, I just plan on lying in the dirt under my grape vines. I love wine grapes. Rush me to Napa and lay me down with the grapes. Peach trees will do.

that superior liberal tolerance and compassion we keep hearing all about.

Current events are really exposing that old chestnut

It's also bringing the Conservative hicks out of the wood works who are so prejudice that if you have a beard you "look Muslim" and you don't "belong here." Graffiti, church burning, and lots and lots of people being harassed and threatened.
And, no, this isn't the media telling me this. Two of my friends have experienced this, and I met a black businesswomen who had run-in with some Deplorables herself and it left her too scared to send her child to school.
Actually, I think I might take a picture of the local tribune building that houses their press and posting them around, because the windows are reinforced because the Klan has a violent history here, and we apparently all need reminders of what happens when bigots feel empowered.

First you have to ask oneself the question: Is the Dept of Education still going to be a dept of the federal government or will,as it should, go back to individual States.
