I'm going to go out on a limb here and also say Heath Ledger (and yes, I thought this before his untimely death). When I first saw the preview for the "Dark Knight," I couldn't even tell that it was him. The man had a lot of talent.

Had he been here on this Earth for a longer period of time, I'm sure he would have found himself with even more varied roles to challenge his skills as a film actor. I would have loved to see him in more independent films, actually. So, I see where you're coming from.

Adding to my answer from earlier.....when it comes to actresses, I don't think anybody will beat Meryl Streep. Although Cate Blanchett is certainly making a case for herself these days.

Oh, oh, oh! Helen Mirren! Outstanding actress!

Whoa! I just had major deja vu while reading this. Meryl Streep is good, as well as Blanchett. Very good choices. I also agree with Ledger and Bale, Bale is phenomenal!

That was Keira Knightley.

Actor:
Tom Hanks
Al Pacino
Bobby DeNiro (I can call him that)
and I can't believe no one has mentioned Jack Nicholson!!!

Actress:
Keria KKnightly
Natalie Portman (not her Star Wars roles)
Cate Blanchet

I mentioned him! I love Jack!

Nobody thought of Richard Burton; I shall never forget (I think the film was "Where Eagles dare"), when with that lovely Welsh Lilt of his he had to say "A hole is a hole is a hole"....not many actors could have got away with that.

Of course, I am biassed; the Ealing Studio actors are my Favourites.......shows my age.:p

I'm your huckleberry.
De Niro was excellent in Ronin... so was that French guy (who looks like my old sociology teacher).

I personally vote for Patrick Stewart.

Captain Picard? DOn't get me wrong, I'm a Star Trek nerd, but what else has he done besides being Professor X?

Patrick Stewart is a Shakespearean actor. I loved him as Scrooge a few years back.

* I forgot about Anthony Hopkins in my last post. He's good, too. And Antonio Banderos.

He was the voice of the emperor in TES III: Oblivion.

Oh and he was in a film called, "Safe House", which I thought was great.
