Best Whiskey?

I'm not a really big whiskey drinker. I do mostly wines or margaritas or pina coladas or any number of mixed drinks.

I bought one of those tiny sampler bottles of Jack Daniels and had a couple shots. It wasn't bad. The first one straight up, the second I mixed in 50/50 water and sipped. I'd love to sample other whiskeys but I don't see most of them for sale in those sampler-sized bottles. That's why I figured I'd ask around. I suppose if I were in the habit of frequenting bars I'd sample a shot of each there. Not in one night of course.

So which of these is best in your opinion, mainly taste-wise?

Jack Daniels
Wild Turkey
Southern Comfort
Crown Royal
Log Cabin
scotch... brand?
other?

Appreciate any input.

First, if it's not a single malt scotch, then you've already ensured you aren't dealing with the best. Second, the brand is less important than the age and the medium in which it was aged. And after 10-12 years, adding years matters less. I like Balvenie's 12 yr. Doublewood more than, say, Oban's 18 yr.

That said, once one gets to a good aged single malt, personal preference is a huge factor (like wine, and whether one prefers a drier wine or not). Some single malts are too smokey form me.

Moving beyond single malts, there are some good bourbons, such as Knob Creek. Maker's Mark is decent enough, but avoid Wild Turkey unless it's 101 and you are just looking to get semi-conscious or fully unconscious as fast as possible (in which case, you're better of with grain alcohol or rum 151). As for most of the blended, even the extremely expensive Johnnie Walker brands don't match up to a far less expensive single malt.

Ah...single malts...

There seems to be a debate around age. On the one side are those that continue to show the age on the label and on the other are those that do not show the age...

At the mo I'm enjoying Ardbeg Uigeadail. No age on this one's label...

Anyone drink any Japanese or Swedish malts?

Ha! I can answer my own question. Just been given a bottle of Yamazaki 18yo.

Quite simply, I've not had a better malt than this. It is divinely complex and satisfying. I cant recommend it enough. The price may make your eyes water but the taste will make you weep.

Try Rye whiskey. Old Overholt is a reasonable start. Bourbons are nice. I love Pappy and Wild Turkey.

My wife spoiled me and bought a bottle each of Gentleman Jack and Elijah Craig.

I think the Elijah Craig is winning so far.

I enjoy drinking scotch whiskey. Mainly smoky tasting stuff from Isley region.
Laphroiag 10 and 18yo are current favourite.

Unless it's Southern Comfort. (It's always the worstest.)

SoCo isn't even whiskey. It's an artificially flavored neutral-grain spirit.

The "best" whiskey in my view is white whiskey (actually bourbon) a.k.a. "legal moonshine." It's diluted to 40% straight out of the still and bottled unaged and unoaked. Peach on the nose with a sweet bourbon aftertaste. Goes down smooth but burns long and hard. Not available everywhere; my state has many independent craft distilleries that make it from local ingredients. The best one I've come across is Headlong White Dog by the Woodinville Whiskey Company. Gets kinda pricey, though.

The second best you can find at any liquor store is Basil Hayden (top shelf). The very best is Old Grand Dad (second shelf). Why? BH and OGD use the exact same mash bill (ratio of ingredients) but OGD is half the price.

The best blend is Drambuie.
