If I would have to say what city is the "babylon", I would say it is Rome or New York. At this moment the description fits very well to New York. By what I know, Jerusalem will not be destroyed like the Babylon.

I think this is an example of believers trying to make themselves and their religion significant to the Bible. I find it ironic that the Gosvels are called the "good news" when there's so much emphasis on the End Times, almost an eagerness.

Do you remember the book The Late Great planet Earth by Hal Lindsey? It came out in the 70's and got a lot of attention. Many expected World War 3 when Reagan was president, mostly due to his aggressive arms race spending. Well that book scared the crap out of a lot of young people, and it was complete garbage. Evangelicals since have been predicting the End Times are near. The funny thing about Lindsey is that his predictions did not come true, but that didn't stop him from writing a follow up book and making excuses for his bad interpretations. There have been hundreds of End Time predictions through time, and none came true. At what point do believers realize this is a foolish effort?

The hundreds of failed predictions is a sign that interpretaing the Bible is something to do symbolically and not literally. It's arguable to say the Bible is obsolete.
