Perhabs its not so much a bastardization of evolution as it is an admission by the Catholic Church that the Genesis might not be the "literal" story of the creation, but rather a metaphor.
I agree entirely.
The Conversation between Henry Drummond and Matthew Brady in "Inherit the Wind":

Drummond: That first day how long was it?
Brady: I do not know. The Bible Says a day.
Drummond: Was it a 24 hour day or 23? Or could it have been year ten thousand years?!
Brady: I do not know.
Drummond: Thean you admit the first day could be of indeterminite length?

Basically what he was trying to say was that God could have used Evolution for his own purposes. I happen to believe in a theory that is across between evolution and creation.
