Biden is now officially worse than Trump in terms of approval rating.

No one really voted for the guy because he was some amazing person, or even a great progressive. Although, I haven't minded his term so far.
People voted for Trump in 2016 because he convinced them he could get things done.
Then they saw that he could - and what he did.
So they voted for someone who wouldn't do much at all in 2020.

According to the latest update on Ballotpedia (which has more recent data than the OP's article):

"President Biden's overall approval average at this point in his term is 46.9%, 6.1 percentage points higher than President Trump's average of 40.8% at this point in his term."

Ballotpedia's Polling Index: Comparison of opinion polling during the Trump and Biden administrations

While I do wish Biden was more progressive, I do think he has made better choices and is more diplomatic than his predecessor.

I appreciate that he is at least making more of an effort on environmental policy.

From the article, it appears that Biden is allowing himself to be managed by his inner circle:

Members of Biden’s inner circle, including first lady Jill Biden and the president’s sister, Valerie Biden Owens, have complained that West Wing staff has managed Biden with kid gloves, not putting him on the road more or allowing him to flash more of his genuine, relatable, albeit gaffe-prone self. One person close to the president pushed for more “let Biden be Biden” moments, with the president himself complaining he does not get to interact enough with voters. The White House has pointed to both security and Covid concerns in restricting the travel of the 79-year-old president.

“A lot of things are out of his control and we are frustrated and all Democrats — not just the White House but anyone with a platform — need to do a better of job of reminding Americans of how terrible it would be if Republicans take control,” said Adrienne Elrod, a senior aide on Biden’s transition team and aide to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.

So, basically, they're admitting here that they have no ideas, there's nothing they can do to help America out of these problems, so the only tactic they can use is saying "The Republicans are much worse."

It seems that there's plenty they could do, if they weren't afraid of angering big business and the wealthy. Nothing is out of their control, but the reason they believe that to be the case is because they're incapable of thinking outside the box.

Well if I had to choose between Trump and a kumquat I'd vote for the kumquat.

Kind of begs the question of who couldn't beat Trump. I look back to the 1990s, when candidates like Ross Perot and Pat Buchanan were soundly rejected by the voters. Buchanan even gave the GOP a scare when he won the 1996 Republican primary in New Hampshire, but they were able to shut him down pretty easily. 20 years later, in 2016, Trump put forth a similar platform and was more successful.

Keep in mind that disapproval can be for very different reasons. There are a lot of progressives who don't approve of Biden, but that doesn't mean they're more likely to vote for a GOP alternative. I think Biden's low approval is a reflection of the face that he is more centrist than Trump was. He bothers both the extreme left and right, but that actually makes him more electable.

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
I predict a Biden endorsed federal gas tax holiday bringing down gas prices by eighteen cents to below five dollars per gallon will boost Biden's approval rating to near 45 percent, which is around what was the orangutan-like President's approval rating.
That's not going to happen.

Democrats want high fuel prices to forcibly push evs on people.

18 cents is going to do what? That's incredibly optimistic.

Dream on cupcake.
Do you really think a drop of $0.18 a gallon is going to make that big of a difference.
Also, what happens when Congress ask "where's the money coming from when you stop collecting the gas tax"
Then what happens when it goes back on (it has to) and price jumps $0.18 a gallon.....

It Aint Necessarily So

Yeah, but look at who's opinion is being solicited. The opinion is more a reflection of the intelligence of the American people than of Biden's performance. Biden's poll numbers fall with inflation and the rising price of gas. I wonder if their approval rating fell for every head of state unable to prevent those. Probably not.

And what will the American electorate's solution to that be? Change parties. Worse, elect Republicans to help them with their economic concerns. Maybe they can get Putin to run. He cares about them as much as any Republican capable of winning the nomination.
