Bizarre: Melania Trump suddenly comes out as pro-choice?

I don't really know what to make of this news regarding Melania Trump. Is she breaking with her husband over the abortion issue, or is this a ploy on his part to have it both ways? Abortion is the single most divisive issue for the Republican Party. Melania has just released a new book, which must have been months in the making. So Donald Trump knew about it. This could not have come as a surprise to him. The timing is clearly intended to affect the election. So I'm inclined to think it is just another attempt to game the results of the election. After all, she is not someone to write a book in English on her own and put out a slick video. Also, this steps on the story about Donald Trump's criminal trial for election interference. That looks to me like a planned release to affect the news cycle on top of a bad story for Trump.

You really think Trump had any clue what was in the book? Why?

Perhaps the Guardian story explains it better than I have:

What is Melania Trump’s game in suddenly defending abortion rights?

This book wasn't written overnight, nor was her video created quickly. They took time and money, especially for someone who doesn't normally write books or produce slick videos. Donald Trump had to have known about it and possibly funded it as an intended October surprise to muddle the Republicans' weakest issue just as people are starting to vote. The release comes not only at the beginning of October, but right on top of bad news for Donald Trump concerning one of his weakest issues: his federal criminal trial for election interference. Yesterday's headline was about new information concerning Trump's involvement in the plot to overturn the 2020 election results.

OTOH, it's possible that Trump did not know about it, and she got the help clandestinely from the publisher of her book. They would have supplied a ghost writer to help her and timed the release for the election.

Trump was pro-choice until he needed people to vote for him. He was smart enough to realise the average pro-choice voter would see through him a lot quicker than the knowledge-suspicious crowd he generally appeals to.

In any case, anything that happens in relation to Trump, even, as he put it himself, shooting someone in broad daylight, will be given a positive spin by MAGA-landers. There is virtually nothing he could conceivably do that committed MAGAs would not find a way to ‘explain’.

Question:

Are we assuming that Melania Trump wants Donald Trump to win the 2024 Presidential election?

If we are making that assumption, why are we doing that?

I don't think that we need to assume anything. All we can do is look at the facts and try to understand what is going on regardless of what we want to believe. I can't read Melania Trump's mind, so my own is quite open about what her motives are. I don't trust Donald Trump at all, so my first thought was that this might have been planned by him as an October surprise. After yesterday's release of new news about Jack Smith's prosecution of his election interference in 2020, my first thought was that this was a planned release by him. But it is plausible that she worked behind his back with the publisher. She stands to earn a lot of money on her own from this book, which looks likely to become a best seller overnight. I assume that her prenup agreement with Trump leaves her in a very unfavorable financial position, if there is a divorce.

Trump himself isn't really anti-choice like Reps want to believe. He even said he won't vote for Florida's ban because he doesn't believe it allows for enough to weeks for allowing an abortion.
I'm not sure if this will help or hurt. Reps are dead against abortion, severely injured, made infertile and dead women are piling up over it. But Melania saying she's pro choice? Will it help or will the toxicly old school minded conservatives see it as Trump being unable to manage his household with his own wife stepping out if line?

That is an interesting point. But I also believe that Donny would be in a "very unfavourable political position" if there is a divorce at this time. So I assume that neither of them wants a divorce at this time.

But since you brought up Melania's financial position, I think she may be doing what she is doing for money.

Trump isn't really anything except pro self all other positions are in service of self and whatever he thinks will benefit that. Right now it is instilling fear in uninformed people in hopes they will return him to power so he can neutralize the legal threats and get them to donate money for his lawyers.

Good point. If Trump loses the various criminal trials will proceed and he will almost certainly lose all support from the USSC and other slimeballs out there. He appears to be suffering from early onset dementia so he is not long for this Earth no matter what, He will almost certainly end his life in prison, unless he can cook up some sort of deal. His empire would likely crumble quite a bit, but what was left, and it would still be at least in the hundreds of millions, would be controlled by Melania. If he was in prison he could no longer embarrass or harass her. Melania wins if Trump loses.

I was curious about the publisher, so I looked it up. The publisher is Skyhorse Publishing, an independent publisher that specializes in rightwing materials, including some wacky conspiracy theories. From the Criticism section of their Wikipedia page:

Criticism

Skyhorse Publishing has been criticised as a toxic workplace, and for printing books containing conspiracy theories.

In 2013, the Southern Poverty Law Center chided Skyhorse Publishing for allowing the American Free Press, whom they described as "an anti-Semitic periodical run by long-time Holocaust denier Willis Carto", to sell two of Belzer's books co-written with journalist David Wayne, Dead Wrong and Hit List.

The Guardian called Skyhorse publisher Tony Lyons “the US publisher who picks up books ‘cancelled’ by other presses. In response, Lyons said, “Maybe the role of publishers is to bring people closer. To encourage them to read things they disagree with, that make them angry, but ultimately to learn things that help them bridge the gap to what they thought they hated but may find some nuance in.”

In June 2022, Simon & Schuster announced it would be distributing Skyhorse's forthcoming publication of the House Select Committee's report on the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. The book will contain an introduction by Darren Beattie, a former Trump employee and conspiracy theorist who has referred to the Committee's investigation as a "witch hunt."

In 2023, the AP reported that Skyhorse had a deal to publish books by the vaccine misinformation organisation Children's Health Defense, run by RFK Jr.

Skyhorse Publishing has also bizarrely demanded a fee for allowing Melania Trump to do an interview with CNN:

CNN requested an interview with Melania Trump. Her book publisher asked for $250,000 in exchange

And here is the video that Melania Trump released this morning. Note that she does not explicitly endorse reproductive rights for women. She just asks the rhetorical question "What does 'My body. My choice.' really mean?" We don't really know what she said in her book. All we have are a news story about it and a lot of buzz.

So many words.
So little meaning.
Perhaps The Donald told her to back the **** off.

It makes me wonder the way he sells stuff if it's true he really is cash poor. Hard to tell since someone like him would try to get someone else to pay the bill anyways, with Trump himself having an established history of doing it, but if he has the money he claims a political campaign and these court fines and legal fees are chump change. But if he doesn't? Blasphemous Bibles and Hip Hop shoes can help make up the difference.

His sale items are publicity stunts not really money makers in and of themselves. They serve to keep his name in front of people so they will donate or visit his properties.
