I think if you actually checked up on this that you'll find that the Canadian banks have done and still do a great deal of investment speculation because that's how they make most of their money. The difference is how much is allowed to go into investments versus being held as a liquid asset, which is higher here in the States after Glass-Steagall was passed in 1999. Even though this did not cause the problem, it definitely made it worse.

I know Canadian banks do this. There are also laws in place force 15% of a bank's net value to be in hard capital.

Is it that you do not have a definition for "white person" or is it you are embarrassed/afraid of your definition of "white person"?
Neither. I think most people here in the States and in many other locations know what "white person" means, and also that the term "white" isn't to be taken as referring to a literal skin color. Referring to some people as being "white" is widespread and largely used even in mass media. What's next, and in-detail discussion of what "the" means? I'll let you and disciple have this "exciting" discussion.

I can sort of understand what they might be getting at, since "white" and "black" have always been somewhat artificial designations anyway. While it's true that the terms and the concepts have been widespread and with us for a long time (and yes, most of us know what "white person" means), there are valid questions whether it's a truly accurate and proper way of classifying various people in our society. Especially since, in order to be considered "white" one had to be at least 7/8 white, whereas one only had to be 1/8 black to be considered "black." When you think of some of the stuff they used to do, like the "paper bag test," it might call into question certain assumptions and things society tends to take for granted when it comes to classifying and identifying what a "white person" or what a "black person" is. So, I can see where challenging those assumptions might be worthwhile from time to time.

Agreed, but I'm not making any assumptions.
