Black Privilege?

They make up roughly 13% of the population while making up nearly half the homicides.

You...Live...at...a..sober..living...complex yet you're talking about crime? What can possibly go wrong at a place where people are constantly battling addiction?

I'm so sick of some whites using the above highlighted? Whites in the history of this country and many other countries have created the most tragic and historic homicides we have known in human history but damn these facts! Whites in the history of this country, as well as others have created systems (not temporal laws) we are talking about systems that favor one ethnic group over another. Today we still feel the residual effects even in my era. But wait, blacks have privilege and although the OP said the title is clickbait but since someone managed to bring up statistics let's talk about this 13% committing half the crime:

"It’s true that around 13 per cent of Americans are black, according to the latest estimates from the US Census Bureau. And yes, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, black offenders committed 52 per cent of homicides recorded in the data between 1980 and 2008. Only 45 per cent of the offenders were white. Homicide is a broader category than “murder” but let’s not split hairs.
Blacks were disproportionately likely to commit homicide and to be the victims. In 2008 the offending rate for blacks was seven times higher than for whites and the victimisation rate was six times higher.

As we found yesterday, 93 per cent of black victims were killed by blacks and 84 per cent of white victims were killed by whites.

Alternative statistics from the FBI are more up to date but include many crimes where the killer’s race is not recorded. These numbers tell a similar story.

In 2013, the FBI has black criminals carrying out 38 per cent of murders, compared to 31.1 per cent for whites. The offender’s race was “unknown” in 29.1 per cent of cases.

What about violent crime more generally? FBI arrest rates are one way into this. Over the last three years of data – 2011 to 2013 – 38.5 per cent of people arrested for murder, manslaughter, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault were black.

Clearly, these figures are problematic. We’re talking about arrests not convictions, and high black arrest rates could be taken as evidence that the police are racist......

Some criminologists think we could be simply confusing race for poverty or inequality: black people tend to offend more because they tend to be more disadvantaged, living in poorer urban areas with less access to public services, and so on.

If you control for deprivation, people of different races ought to be similarly predisposed to commit crime
. Or that’s the theory, at least."

I don't live at a sober living complex anymore. It's a Catholic Charities apartment in the ghetto.

Most people have no intention of staying sober here.

My hero and favorite person I've met in this city, is my AA sponsor, and if i were racist, I would think less of him for his African heritage.

There are other minorities in my life who I look up to and consider far better people than myself.

If I were racist, I would think less of them for their ethnicity.

Thing is, I have lived in predominantly white neighborhoods and predominantly black neighborhoods.

Getting harrassed, jumped, hearing racial slurrs, gang activity, prostitution, trash all over the place, graffiti, getting ripped off, mugged, or possessions stolen, has always been FAR more common in predominantly black neighborhoods I've been in. It's so much more prevalent you cant even begin to make a comparison, because in some neighborhoods i lived in for years, I just didn't see that stuff happen at all.

It isn't racist to state such an obvious observation. And a lot of people avoid such areas of the city for self-preservation and it has nothing to do with racism. It is simply a survival instinct.

If you live in a complex called a "ghetto" where people are battling addiction and you are the "minority" (whatever that means) then yes you'll have issues with the dregs of society. It's common sense that you'll experience adversity among this population so bringing it up to make a point is moot. I'm sure if I lived in a sober living home with a bunch of whites I'm sure one or two or maybe three or four will call me a N******* at some point. ,I know when I hang with a bunch of white dudes outside of work I've noticed race comes up especially when beer gets in their system. So it goes both ways but to point out some addict behavior as if this is some relation to the masses is a futile attempt.

That's unfortunate that you deal with racism.

I feel for you. I really do. I deal with racism too.

And im not just talking about people at the complex i live. It's seen in jails, prisons, psyche wards, and very prevalent in multiple neighborhoods in different states i have lived.

I have met multiple black people who are walking examples of what a good, intelligent, responsible, humble, kind, virtuous person should be, and outdo most white people in putting forth a good example.

So, they are truly examples and proof that ethnicity doesnt determine how well a person will behave in word, thought, and deed! I cherish friendship with such people, and they are better for society than myself imo.

However, speaking of the N word you mentioned. I hear that word used a lot, even loudly in rooms full of people, and sometimes shouted as an insult...and the people i hear using that ugly word, well over 9 times out of ten, are black.

I don't use that word by the way. Not even when conversing with prejudiced white people.

No one should be judged for their ethnicity.

I even started a thread titled "greedy Europeans" where I pointed the finger at crimes commited by people of my own ethnicity.

However, there is a HUGE double-standard I have seen.

Racism, hate, and bigotry is far more acceptable and tolerated on average when it comes from certain ethnic or Religious groups, and the same behavior condemned when it comes from others.

In my experience, the pendulum has really swung to the opposite extreme in our culture. There are huge double standards where racism and hate-speech against white people is tolerated, but zero tolerance for similar speech coming from Caucasians.

Hate and bigotry should be condemned equally, regardless of who it is coming from!

And I try to do just that. But I'm not going to be politically correct about stating my observations.

There is a time where hatred is however acceptable, when the hatred is for hatred itself.

I have read calls to violence, torture, mutilation, tyranny, antisemitism, hate, and bigotry in the Qu'ran, and it is noble to have a disgust for such ideology no matter who it is coming from.

Obama was simply mistaken when he said, "we should not call them Islamic terrorists. They hijacked a peaceful Religion".

The Qu'ran, the Hadiths, and the extremist actions + policies of Muhammad and the first Muslims, prove Obama and so many people who make such claims, wrong!

I'll say the same things about such cruel psychopathic crimes against humanity in the Bible!

Thoughts? Are racial double standards ever ethically justifiable? If the goal is racial equality, are they beneficial in this regard?

I guess it depends on whether the actual goal is racial equality in the here and now - or whether it's to pursue retroactive justice over past wrongs.

There are also those who don't seem to focus so much on equality as much as just wanting people to get along, to be nice to each other, using buzzwords like "sensitivity" and "tolerance." That seems incongruous and counterproductive if the goal is true equality.

I think the double standards would indicate a somewhat conflicted set of principles and cross purposes at work. Whether it's ethical or not is a difficult question, but the main problem seems to be is that it's hard to discern what the actual "goal" truly is.

It points out the racial double standards indeed and beneficial because it brings to light......I mean we can always talk about why today whites are calling cops on blacks for the dumbest reasons.

Also, the author wasn't denying that blacks are victims of double standards:

"A critic might object that I’m selectively discussing double-standards that favor blacks while ignoring those that favor whites. That’s true. But my intent here is not to give an even-handed overview of all racial double-standards. Rather, I wish to point out the meta-double-standard in how we react to racial double-standards. When a black person is treated unfairly, our society responds swiftly and robustly. Consider, for instance, the recent incident at a Philadelphia Starbucks in which two black men were arrested while waiting for a friend. Thought by many to have been motivated by racial bias, the incident soon had #BoycottStarbucks trending on Twitter, prompting Starbucks to shut down 8,000 stores for a half-day of anti-bias trainings. By comparison, when Taco Bell infected 65 people in three different states with E. Coli, hospitalizing nine, they temporarily shut down only fifteen restaurants. Chipotle shut down only 43 restaurants in response to a similar outbreak. That Starbucks shut down fully 8,000 stores belies the idea that our society does not respond adequately to anti-black racism. To the contrary, we treat isolated incidents of alleged racism like nascent global pandemics.

While mainstream media outlets know how to talk about anti-black racism, as of yet, most of them haven’t figured out how to talk about less comfortable race-related topics—topics that don’t gel nicely with the picture of modern-day blacks as helpless functions of history. Can we speak honestly, for instance, about the fact that blacks make up 14 percent of the population but commit 52 percent of the homicides? Or to state the problem in reverse, can we speak honestly about the fact that the same percentage of America’s murder victims are black? Will purveyors of the idea that culture is irrelevant ever explain why blacks living in the same Los Angeles neighborhoods as Hispanics are nevertheless murdered at two to four times the rate?3 Do proponents of the idea that high-crime black neighborhoods are over-policed have a realistic solution to the epidemic of unsolved murders in such neighborhoods that does not involve more policing? And if they do have such a solution, will we ever be able to marshal the bipartisan coalition necessary to implement it when so many on the Left cannot even bring themselves to mention the statistics needed to describe the problem? Can we speak honestly about the social and psychological consequences of living in a community where known murderers roam free? Can we speak honestly about the economic externalities of high crime rates—the capital that is scared away; the higher prices businesses must charge to compensate for the increased risk of robbery? Or does the ever-present specter of white supremacy—and the attendant risk of trafficking in old stereotypes—really loom so large as to render frank discussion of these issues and their policy implications anathema?"

What is equality....
- Equality of opportunity?
- Equality of outcome?

If the latter, we need affirmative for Amish in astrophysics, for whites
& Asians in basketball, & for atheists in Congress & the White House.
So....who's up for affirmative action benefitting someone else's group?

That is way too much to ask and an offense to political correctness.

Shame on you! :p

In certain progressive circles, expressing such an attitude would be considered indicative of your white privilege and perhaps even an implicit white supremacism.
Indeed, in some academic circles, professing "colour blindness" is akin to being subversive and obstructionist. It's a great way to get called out for ones "white privileged" bias.

It's not affirmative action, but I recently saw a promotional tweet by a company that boasted that their diversity initiatives had been so successful that 80% of their managers were now women.

I wonder at what point diversity initiatives stop being successful...

I would also mention that the "war on drugs" should be noted as a contributing factor in all of this. And many have charged that the war on drugs disproportionately targets nonwhite groups. The gangs, cartels, the over-policing and militarization of the police nationwide - a lot of it is due to this obsession that some people have over drugs.

The WoD must rank as one of the most ill conceived and harmful policies in human history.

The 'Race issue' will only be solved when it is no longer a topic of conversation. When a person's skin colour matters as much as their hair or eye colour.

Now, I may be wrong; it has yet to be tried. BUT,
I believe that if a gorilla were to show up at
a redneck bar, and he knew how to act like one
of the good old boys
, it would not be long before
they'd not only accept him, but would make him
one of their own, proud to do so.

Same with an Upper East Side get together,
of the rich movers and shakers. If that gorilla
had a billion dollars and knew the intricacies
of the East Side, he'd do great!

"Race" is not about skin colour! It is culture.

Identity politics is just bringing that ol' tribalism
out in the open and being exploited by those
with their own gain in mind.

Tribes are ok! We need them. And they wont go
away.

But-
All Americans better learn to see themselves as
all part of the same American tribe, besides being
this or that color, occupation, region, or we are all
going to be very sorry.

Thing is, I see through it. It is not subversive, it is
just obnoxious and phony. I might call someone
out for it, depends.

It is just a cheap way to try to grab the moral
high ground, and it takes zero effort or sincerity.

IF-and believe me, I am not-but IF I were going
to march in a demonstration about some issue
for Asian Americans, I wont want a bunch of
people from the white-saviour-industrial-complex
to join in.

OUR issue. People wanting to hijack it for their
own self glorification, not welcome.
