The assumption is that, if a God exists, we can understand its characteristics, and that makes perfect sense. We know what gods are, and we have a fairly well-defined concept of God, even if it is self-contradictory. If you think that there is some aspect of God that we cannot explain, then you'll have to explain what that is.That is probably the number one reason that I find a statement such as the OP used to be basically pointless. It assumes that if a god exists, we can know its characteristics.
