Matthew 5:42

Luke 14:12-14
He said also to the man who had invited him, “When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”

Luke 12:33-34
Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also

Isaiah 58:10
If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday.

Deuteronomy 15:7-11
“If among you, one of your brothers should become poor, in any of your towns within your land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother, but you shall open your hand to him and lend him sufficient for his need, whatever it may be. Take care lest there be an unworthy thought in your heart and you say, ‘The seventh year, the year of release is near,’ and your eye look grudgingly on your poor brother, and you give him nothing, and he cry to the Lord against you, and you be guilty of sin. You shall give to him freely, and your heart shall not be grudging when you give to him, because for this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake. For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.’

Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you?

James 1:27
Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

Matthew 19:21
Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”

Leviticus 19:9-10

And you shall not strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the Lord your God.

Luke 21:1-4
Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box, and he saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. And he said, “Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”

Isaiah 58:6-7
“Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?

Yes, but exploiting the poor might make him even more blessed.

The unfortunate reality according to my observations is that all too many really pay not much more than lip-service to the poor, including the fundamentalist Protestant church I grew up in. And I'll repeat something I posted a couple of days ago, namely that if Jesus walked into many of these churches and started preaching, he probably would be escorted out the door as being some sort of hippie on drugs.

Even when we look at the vast majority of discussions here at RF, how many of them deal with the issue of poverty even from a religious perspective?

It goes to show who the true Christians are and how seldom one can be found

"Blessed are the poor" didn't quite hit the mark.

First, the title almost presumes the opposite, that the rich aren't blessed.

Second, half of your quotes are praising donations to the poor and the donators, not the poor themselves. If a person had no riches, then how could they donate funds to the poor?

I think "Blessed are the givers (or donators) " would be better.

I was kidding.

Sort of. If it is true that the poor is blessed, would you give him 1million dollars, and help him out of his misery, knowing that this present might geopardize his blessed status?

I understand your point, but Jesus did say "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God." That is a strong statement.

Perhaps I should have left the rest of the quotes out, but they are very good messages at any rate.

So, don't you think that this "the poors are blessed" could have been abused to make a moral case towards preventing them to leave their poverty status?

In other words, it should not be a surprise if people with money, especially the members of the clergy who thought they were blessed anyway, liked that Jesus so much.

That is possible! Jesus was just a carpenter though, so I doubt he had much money.

I am sure He had the best intentions. But I don't think He realized how dangerous that claim was.

It naturally leads to not loving the poor, but to love poverty.

That's possible. Or it could be that he was simply stating a fact, that the poor are blessed. It could be something he knew to be factual.

However, there are enough verses commanding people to give to the poor, that no one has an excuse for being a wealthy Christian and not giving to the poor.

Luke 6:20 and Matthew and Matthew 5:3 don't say poor. They say, "beggarly".

Blessed are they who beg for God's Holy Spirit. Rich people can do that too.
