“Billionaire former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg this week pledged to pay off the debts of formerly convicted criminals in Florida, to allow them to be eligible under state law to vote in the upcoming US presidential election.”

Billionaire's 'stunning' gesture could lose the election for Trump

This brought a smile to my face for a lot of reasons. Mainly because it is such a ‘left field’ manoeuvre.

I particularly like this quote -

“If you say people can't vote until their debts are paid and then object to their debts being paid, you confirm that your true purpose was to prevent voting rather than to collect debt,” he wrote on Twitter this morning.

Yeah, there is enough to go around.

Anyone who says that it’s OK for the wealthiest 100 people to have wealth equivalent to the poorest 3.5 billion has proved, IMO, that they are lamentably ignorant.

That is the actual situation btw. I could fit those 100 men in my apartment, and their wealth equals half of all the humans living - the poor half. It is inconceivably obscene and inhuman IMO.

  • Hypothetical situation: You cannot drive because your car is in need of repairs and you don't have the money to pay for the repairs.
  • I finance the repair of your car.
  • After your car is repaired, you drive it and, while driving, hit and kill Mr. X.
  • Am I guilty of bribing you to kill Mr. X?

I get that. But they are giving away sums of money which they could never amass in a sane world IMO.

That actually reinforces my point. He can give away $18 billion - and still has around $70 billion left !

Who could possibly need more than $1 billion ?

I simply cannot accept that a person with that much wealth would keep all or most of it while millions are starving and living without fresh water, unless they were psychopathic.

Who but a psychopath could watch thousands dying, and living in misery, and say “But I have a right to this money, so you have to die” ?

He could have offered to pay off the debt of a few struggling families without expectation of any return. This is simply a vote-for-pay scheme...

The difference here is that Bloomberg is paying off debt for the expressed purpose of voting. In your hypothetical you would have to pay to have my car repaired for the express purpose of my hitting someone to equate it to Bloomberg's intent.

There is no obligation to vote one way or the other, or at all.
So what is your problem ?
