Telegraph sacks cartoonist Bob Moran over Twitter posts targeting NHS doctor

This is about "Freedom of Speech":
a) Charlie Hebdo, cartoonist, in Paris a few years ago
Killed over his cartoons

b) Bob Moran, cartoonist, in Britain now
Sacked by Telegraph over his cartoons

c) Eline van ‘t N. , journalist, in Holland (Europe)
Jailed for filming a protest
(my thread yesterday)

(There are plenty more of these examples; not just Holland)

How is this in your country?
Have you already noticed such a trend?
Do you see dangers if Freedom of Speech is gone?
Should we (do you) protest against this trend?

This is daft. It's not about freedom of speech, it's about using social media to incite harassment.

Do you really think you should be "free" to call for the abuse of a named person, on social media? Have you any conception of what happens when people do that? All the stinking creeps will come out of the woodwork and make death threats, she will get stalkers - the works.

It's like calling for a public lynching - of a palliative care doctor i.e. someone whose profession is care of the incurable and dying - because she advocated masks on public transport during the epidemic.

What's wrong with you?

Inciting verbal abuse of someone is a clear-cut reason to sack them from their position, let alone a position within a privately owned firm.

Good call to sack him. I hope the action makes it clear that incitement is a line not to be crossed.

Firstly he wasn't sacked for his cartoon

But there are always limits to Freedom of Speech - one of them is if your speech causes harm.
The man who stands up in a crowded cinema and shouts, "Fire" may cause harm.
Berating people for promoting wearing of masks may also cause harm.

If your job is expected to reflect the ethos of your newspaper you should not be surprised if you breach them that you are asked to leave.

The joke here is that the ethos of the Torygraph is far-right anti-mask ranting, to judge by their columnists, e.g Alison Pearson. :D

But inciting harassment is not, thank goodness.

Am I the only one who finds it quite problematic to compare a mere sacking for incitement of verbal abuse to an actual death of a cartoonist at the hands of terrorists?

He wasn't sacked for his cartoons, he was sacked for saying this on Twitter (and possibly there are other tweets:)

"Moran encouraged his followers to abuse a palliative care doctor who posted about wearing masks on public transport to stop the spread of Covid-19.

He wrote: 'She deserves to be verbally abused in public for the rest of her worthless existence. They all do.'”

No, you're definitely not the only one, this falls into the same ditch as comparing the Holocaust to Covid mandates.

Seems to be

Not a good call

Sometimes people need to cross lines

Hold on: are you implying that you support the man's incitement of verbal abuse against medical staff for doing their job and echoing expert advice, or do you have another point? I really hope it's the latter.

I'm not implying that

I did not say that

Many points

What did you mean by this?

Sometimes people need to cross lines

It sounded too much like supporting or being indifferent to the incitement, hence my asking for clarification.

Because supporting illegal and harmful actions against medical staff doing their job according to scientific advice seems to me ethically indefensible.

Cancel culture and censorship is an ongoing trend and problem now.

The only recourse is to boycott and protest the media rag.
